Ban Girls Gone Wild Commercials?

Reply Sun 21 Jan, 2007 09:09 am
A Dem from Tennessee has written a bill to ban the running of Girls Gone Wild commercials.

Personally, I hate waking up to that smut when we fall asleep with Comedy Central on. And, since the Cubs are teens, I should be able to go to bed when they have a friend over for the night and will be up late, without worying if they will see it.

I find it rather demeaning. Can't imagine being a parent of one of those girls and I think the popularity of the series encourages young girls to get their 15 minutes without thinking ahead to the point that one day they will have their degree (hopefully) and will be trying to get a job.

Anyway, should these commercials be banned?

One vote against censorship registered. You decide what you want to watch, and IÂ’ll decide what I want to watch, K?

So, should regular porn be shown on basic as well? Just turn the channel?

Cause, GGW IS porn. They barely cover the naughty bits, and still show sexual content like girls making out with girls.

Very desensitizing, IMO.

I suppose being a parent would alter my attitude but I really detest the idea of censorship.

I think, things like that should have their own channel.

I agree that people should be allowed to see what they want, but we ALL know it is there so no need to riddle public television with it where most people dont want to see it.

Instead, title a cable channel with something appropriate where , if people want to buy that, just watch it, or record the ads and small shows, they can.
And those of us who dont, just know not to turn that specific channel on.

Yeah. Make it available to those who want it, but keep it away from channels children are most likely to watch.

One of the very, very rare times where I disagree with you, Squinney. And I disagree strongly.

A seperate channel (or channels) which parental units can block if they so desire.

While I rarely watch the telly when in Europe, I have noticed there is a great deal more of nudity and sexuality on the telly over there. Doesn't seem to have caused any harm. I, of course, have no data to back that up.

I think it's of a different callibur than the GGW stuff Squinney's talking about. But, I can't say for sure.

I was much more concerned about censorship when my children were small. I tried to steer them away from movies, such as Charles Bronson's vigilante killer series, than sex.

Perhaps it's only me, but if I was a parent I would be far more concerned about the violence on every channel public and cable.

I absolutely agree about violence, but we're talking about sex. And in a sense, the GGW stuff is violent. Well, it's violating, anyway.

We, Bear and I, of all parents, aren't bothered by nudity or our children seeing the human body.

But, I was very uncomfortable having this 4-5 minute commercial pop up in the middle of "Scrubs" one day last week when it was only 8:30 at night.

It isn't the nudity - the human body is beautiful in all of its forms. It's the fact that we are exposing children to sexual behavior that is lewd. Many of the shots are in public, crowded places as if making out, flashing boobs and dropping ones pants is appropriate behavior for a party. Hey, it's all in fun, right? No harm. My body isn't private, cherishable or respectable. Such behavior won't effect / affect me in any way. See, everyone else is doing it.

Perhaps I do have a different view as a parent of teens and knowing that there is a huge increase in acceptance of sexual and especially bi-sexual behavior.

For those against censorship - does that mean regular porn should be shown on basic cable? I'm not giving them access to Cinemax. This is on basic cable.

Yer right about one thing...being a parent definitely might make a difference. I'll acknowledge that since I am not a parent...perhaps I feel a bit cavalier about the matter.

I'd also point out that this is a commercial. I can decide what programs we watch, but when I'm watching "Scrubs" with the kids and this pops up as a commercial there's no warning. I can't control the commercials shown during a show that is perfectly acceptable for them to see.

I'll answer directly. GGW commercials are no more pornographic than many of today's TV programs. I'll not have my government decide where the line is drawn if I can help it. No kids, but I am aware that cable and satellite systems both come with parental block capabilities that could be used to demonstrate your disapproval of content... without government censorship. Don't like CC's policies; block them when you go to bed. Don't like the commercials during Scrubs? Don't watch it... and pen a letter to articulate why you don't.

Im with you in one respect .

I dont want Jillian to see other people out stripping at bars and such knowing as I do , those kids / girls and boys, can be tormented and even raped in those situations.

Being naked is no issue.

Having sex , is no issue

but promoting the situations where girls are violated simply because they are drunk bothers me.
They are exploited by who ever produces these videos.

Remember the law suits following the first series? Where people did NOT give consent?
well that has changed now, but it still leaves a nasty taste in my mouth.

I believe ( though I have not been there ) that European tv just simply has people living their lives. If they change clothes during a scene.. so what.
If the character is in love with thier co-star in the movie they have sex. So what.
That is no big issue .

I just take issue with drunk CHILDREN being recorded and sold as sex items.
But that is americas fucked up images of women and sex.

Not to mention, just like Dys said..

instead of sex, in america , you can see someone getting their head blown off because of a drug issue gone bad.
We all know how to kill someone thanks to television.

I would rather everyone be exposed to sex so that we are all calm , naked and enjoying each other, instead of promoting guns, armor piercing bullets and drugs.
