I think it's because of the Simpson's when Willy called the French "Cheese eating surrender monkeys." It was then used by the knuckle draggers when Chirac used the French veto in the UN.

Eating cheese is quite nice, and infinitely preferable to what those brown nosing lickspittles munch on every day.

And don't forget that too many Americans are only aware of two different cheeses, white American and yellow American.

What's especially humorous is that the Simpson's made up a phrase to mock bigoted, dim witted folks and dimwitted folks are using it.

Interesting chart. Shows massive rise in poverty in 2008-2010; then stabilization; then a sharp drop in 2015.

Wonder if there was anything particular that happened in 2008-10... maybe a global financial and economic crisis that fueled a surge in poverty across much of the world?
