@sun82bh,
Sun that's really a good q, one that has gone unasked through my 83 years in the field of journ. So I inquired of my Better Half, who is much smarter than I, and she agreed it doesn't matter that much though she likes "makes"

Dale, would you say "Many years of toil has worn me down?"

I think the issue is whether the years which have passed are intended to be considered as a series, i.e. individually or as a block of time. I would have thought that "ten years" might be either, but "many years" is tending towards being plural.

@contrex,
Quote:

Maybe if they passed by somehow as a unit

How many cars have you owned
Ten cars has been my downfall

Ten cars have been my downfall (because 'ten cars' are plural)

The ownership of ten cars have been my downfall (because 'the ownership' is singular)

I think you're just arguing for the sake of arguing (not uncommon on here).

@dalehileman,
Thanks Dale!
I also thought that "makes" read better, but thought would get an expert opinion! The arguments made here are all valid though!

Thanks again for your input.
