collapsed lung need ans please

two weeks ago my dad had a collapsed lung they were going to cut them both in half but they said it wouldnt do any good. he has sever emphsyma and smokes they told him to turn is oxygen up but he still has a hard time breathing they also told him that anything can make it recollapse. he is 56 do we have any chance of him living for awhile?
