It is an interesting study to compare a map like this with maps showing high rates of divorce, teenage pregnancy, out of marriage births, physical abuse, etc.......

Wow, look at that. It's like a stripe right down the middle of the country. Religious people must like flat open ground. Or cornfields. Or maybe they just don't like oceans...

And then there's Utah (except for the Navajo Nation)

I'm surprised by the southeast seaboard states. I thought Georgia, the Carolinas and Virginia would be awash in red, but they're not.

In the North East areas of high population density seem to be more religious than more rural areas. Except for a few exceptions. I wonder if it's a function of how many people thay can catch to take the census (without getting shot at).

Well, these don't match up real well, but it's still interesting.

Teen pregnancy rates

Incarceration rates

My guess: in the North East the white population isnt very religious, not in the cities but not in, say, rural Vermont, NH or Maine much either. But the cities have large Hispanic and black communities, and those are significantly more religious.

What surprised me about this map was the lack of religion in the so-called Bible Belt.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/c2/BibleBelt.png/280px-BibleBelt.png

The Bible Belt now appears to be running N-S from MN/ND to TX.

SC is a surprise. Conservative Christians want to make this a Christian exodus state. Looks like they would have better luck on OK.

And I quote from the first image:

Quote:
Country percentages based on the total number of adherents reported by the 149 religious bodys that participated in a study sponsored by the Association of Statistics of American Religious Bodys divided by the total population in 2000 reported by the U.S. census bureau.

This leaves the possibility that not all religions are represented in this survey. I'm sure there are a LOT more than 149 religions in the US. Most of them are probably marginal but still.

It probable is impossible to get this right, that is, to include everyone of every belief.

What about spiritualist? Are they considered religious?

Pagans? They practice religion.

I noticed that MASS is more religious than many of the Bible Belt states.

Are they suppose to be associated with the liberal socialistic atheistic left?

I notice there are no religious people in Lake Michigan, why is that?

Just kidding, very very interesting map(s), I'm gonna study later after a 2nd cup of joe.

just a thought re kentucky and w va....perhaps because it being rugged land, and the few people that do live there....it isn't worth it for them to travel to go to church, so don't join? same for southern ohio....?

S Ohio is not very rugged. I have always imagined that rural farm folks are the religious ones, conservative who stick to tried and true ways. The urban people less so.

All the statistics I've ever heard about atheism in the US never claimed that the percentage was over 10%, so I just feel this doesn't add up.

Pagans and spiritualist don't consider themselves atheist. I don't know if Buddhist see themselves as atheist either. I'll have to let a Buddhist answer that.
