Hi all!
I'm still a high school student- grade 11, but I've not decided anything or thought about my future career yet. I don't know which one suit me.
I like to design but as my teacher said, I'm not good at all. I think I'm creative and dynamic.
Can you give me some advices how to choose a right career?

Thanks very much! Smile

Why do you think your teacher says this? Is it a lack of focus or follow through? Lack of technical precision? Impossible designs? Something else?

Find out if he or she has a good reason for saying these things, then act accordingly. If it's a lack of focus, maturity usually helps. A lack of precision can be helped (although not necessarily completely cured) with some schooling.

Also, consider careers that are similar. Is it more artistic or engineering design? Or something like fashion or inventions? Those can also lead you to school which would not only give you grounding and mechanics but would also be a good place to mature and think about your future. 11th grade is awfully young to be deciding these things and you may very well find that if you take some time doing a lot of different things that something else appeals to you more.

Imagine your retired and when you look back on your life, what career makes you happy to think you did it for 40+ years?

Im in my early 30's, too good for the dull job I do now, too thick to do anything else and I have promised myself not to spend the next 30+ years in a job I cant stand.
I have recently registered as a sole trader so I can turn my hobby into a business.
No idea what Im doing but at least Ive made a start.

Good luck in your choice and I dont think your teacher is doing you any favours, teachers are meant to help and guide, not criticise.

Vocational guidance wasn't that helpful. I studied the things that interested me and made a career from there.

soitw- Welcome to A2K! Very Happy

I think that your teacher is not giving you the right advice. She should be encouraging you, not criticizing.

Saying that, you might want to take a proactive stand. If you are really unsure of what you want, go to a college counselling center. Many schools offer a package of intelligence, aptitude, and and interest tests that will help a person to decide as to the type of career to which he is best suited, and is most likely to succeed at.

The tests are not free, so you will have to talk to your parents, and see if they are willing to pay for them. I went that route when I was about your age, and found the tests very helpful in focusing on my future plans.
