OK, I can see that we are filling a big gap here. I'm not afraid of that. Just remember that these must be the biggest names possible. This is the general rule for such suggestions on Wikipedia: always start from the most glaringly missing names.
American football and the "internal" American television are not popular here. Germans, the French, Swedes seem to have followed these developments.
Think about some people connected with Las Vegas, for example, with New York, with Hollywood, since we are in show business.
When you get to names which will seem too small, just stop.
Major politicians, business tycoons are also OK. Also legendary sportspeople.
Thanks.

Actually, I selected those names because I thought they were so big they transcended sports, in the sense that even non-sports fans knew Howard Cosell, etc. But I guess not. Anyway, no more forays into sports.

Be back with some more. Anybody else want to contribute, please jump right in.

Okay, this is my mistake. I apologize to everybody.

When I sent out the invites, I didn't fully explain what we are doing here.

Literary poland is making additions to the Polish Wikipedia about American performers, a subject of great interest in Poland.

They already have many entries. Literarypoland and his colleagues are looking for suggestions for those performers they missed. So the idea is to think of important performers that you think they might have overlooked, put them into the Search box {url=http://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strona_g%C5%82%C3%B3wna]here[/url]. If the Polish Wikipedia does not already have an entry for the name, then submit it on this thread.

If yo subjit the name "Lenny bruce", for instance, you see some printing, but no real entry.

Again, I apologize for not making this clear.

These are not in order, as will be obvious when I remember important folks I've forgotten.

Cross off George Gobel. To me he was important, in early tv comedy, as was John Cameron Swayze in early tv news, but not in the large scheme.

Add

Lucille Ball
Charlie Chaplin, who should have been named very early in my lists.

There's a director I'm blanking on.. very early guy.

Ed Sullivan
Jimmy Durante
Bob Hope
Bing Crosby
Ann Blyth
Ann Sothern
Rita Hayworth
Fred Astaire
Ginger Rogers
Audrey Hepburn
Kathryn Hepburn

rest phase

Sorry, I guess I did the automaton thing.

Ah, well, I'm in no mood to check them all now, but I'll stop.

Back tomorrow with renewed energy, and will check names first.

The Polish Wikipedia already has Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire.

Again this is my mess-up.

The idea is to come up with the name, then write it in the Search box here. If there is no article already on that person, then submit the name.

I should have explained this in the invite. My apologies.

Haven't read up...... meaning, I haven't checked to see what others have written.

Comics: Steve Martin, Richard Pryor, Chevy Chase, Jim Bulushi
Musicians: Alex Chilton, Neil Young (technically Canadian, eh), Beck (I bet you know Beck, though), Lucinda Williams, Roy Orbison
Actors: Kevin Spacey, Matthew Broderick, Bernadette Peters

Weird and random list! And brief at that!

I included Howdy Doody, even though he was not a real person, but a puppet. He was so popular, that for many years, pregnant women would order tickets for the show, figuring that by the time they got the tickets, their tot would be old enough to appreciate the show! Laughing

Monroe, Martin, Pryor, Chase, Young, Orbison, Spacey, Broderick, Bacall, and even Peters were already there. But a lot of new names.
Of course the easiest way would be just to translate the whole English-language Wikipedia, however maybe choosing the best known names is better for Polish readers.
The best known American movies, westerns for example, were shown in Poland in the 1960s, 1970s and 80s. Certainly before the war.
Notice the famous photo: it's 1981, tanks on the streets, and the cinema sign says: Apocalypse Now! The movie may have been aggressive, but wasn't anti-Soviet, so censors didn't have objections.
On TV we had in the 1980s lots of black-and-white American movies: The Twelve Angry Men, westerns and such.
Nowadays, I have VIVA (=videos), and all the major Hollywood productions are shown on public TV some three years after their release to our cinemas.
You have great new actors and singers: Brad Pitt, Avril Lavigne, Britney, Shakira, the rappers.

Beck was there, but under his full name. I've asked for redirection.

I see that the list already has Edward R. Murrow. Three other national newscasters that were important to television were:

Walter Cronkite
Chet Huntley
David Brinkley
