Could you check the Polish Wikipedia

http://pl.wikipedia.org/

I'm writing (or rather translating) there, voluntarily, in the fields of American and British culture.
Poland is very Americanized and you can be surprised by its Wikipedia's detailed coverage of for example American actors, actresses, writers. As to the overall number of articles, we are now ranking 4th in the world.
I will tell you what I mean: In late 2004 I checked the ten major American stars for that year and that's how I discovered Paris Hilton, then totally unknown here.
I'm looking for people who are so big in America that you think they should have a place in our Wiki.
I'm a specialist in culture, so let's stay in culture. Maybe some politics, but no sports.
Just put the name in the box and click Przejdz (=Go there). It's better than checking Polski in the English version.

This guy is more historical than current, but still important.

Hank Williams.

He was to country music what Elvis was to rock and roll.

Just something I noticed about "the" and the Polish Wikipedia.

In the English version, when I write in "Temptations" or "Four Tops", I get brought to the article on the The Temptations or The Four Tops.

In the Polish version, when I write in "Temptations", I get nothing. When I write in "Four Tops", I get nothing.

But when I write in "The Temptations" or "The Four Tops", I get the articles on the musical groups.

Just thought I would let you know about that.

Foiund a few more.

Two are dead, two are past their prime but still very important. All four are absolute musts to include, you will read references about them in current articles.

WC Fields: Comedy giant from the movies' early days. People still do imitations of some his comedy routines. Creully racist in a couple of scenes, but that was the times.

Pat Boone: Elvis' rival for top spot on the music charts in the early days of rock and roll. Fell out of favor because he took the edge of some edgy music, but had a lot to do with the acceptance of the new style. Had his own TV show in the early days of TV and became something of a symbol for people who came of age shortly after WWII.

Bob Newhart: Came up with Bill Cosby as one of the new generation of comedians who were different from the vaudevillians. Like Cosby, had big success on TV. Not quite as big as Cosby, but if you have room for a trifle like Shannen Doherty, you have room for somebody important like Bob Newhart.

Henny Youngman: One of the most famous of the comedians to come out of vaudeville and make it in the TV era, although he had no show of his own. People still recite his comedy routines.

OK, I need just such names.
As to "the", we are not at that level yet. I'll try to make people aware of this using the Wiki forum.
Thanks! And give me more!

Great! The capacity is unlimited because we are on American servers. All these names will first go to the "waiting room", and then experts, or me myself will create the entries.
Thanks!

Of course, I don't mean some salaried experts. They are music enthusiasts, or movie buffs. I'm in Poland, but maybe some of them are in America, I don't know.

OK, I checked their professions and added everyone to the lists. Steve Allen was already waiting! Andy Kaufman has an entry, but I added Chuck Barris (both known from recent movies).

We have a tradition of stand-up comedians here in Poland, they concentrate mainly on politics and current events. However, they don't have regular shows on TV, but are rather constantly on the road, performing like rock bands.

Have a look at this:

http://pl.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pretenders&redirect=no

A special additional page must be created in such cases. Simple, just one line of Wiki code (see Edytuj and don't be afraid of the warning, it says you should log in). But it would have to be done in bulk, so maybe in the future. I could do it myself in the categories: American bands, British bands. We'll see.

literarypoland:

If I may make a suggestion, I would suggest you email the moderators and get this thread moved to TV or music. Although this thread was started for a reference work, I think the major topic is really American entertainers. So far, I am the only contributor to this thread except yourself, beause I think most visitors to the Reference section are seeking more scholarly pursuits.

If you get this moved to the TV section or music or movies section, I am very, very sure you will have many more contributors with many more names than I can come up with. Plus, the contributors will have fun giving you lists of actors and entertainers that have belong on the list.

I really think you should ask the mods to move this thread. Smile

PS:

Perhaps you can get the mods to change the title to something like: American Entertainers-Who do YOU think is important?

Something like that.

We have a similar situation here. Typically, a comedian starts out doing stand up in night clubs and if they become popular enough over the ocurse of years, they usually get a TV show.

The major difference is that not everyone does political humor. In fact, Mort Sahl and Lenny Bruce were the first comedians anyone could remember who got big doing topical or political humor. Before them, comedians might make one or two political jokes for their whole performance.

I think another reason American comics get TV shows is that lately they are people who studied acting in college and just started standup as another means of performance. So if you put them in a TV show, you are dealing with a trained actor. Twenty years ago, I think most American comedians were just regular people in regular jobs with no acting training, who were considered funny by their friends and just decided to try comedy.

Putting them into a TV show was harder because they had to learn the basics of acting from the very beginning.
