A bill has passed the House, to establish a pilot program under which eight states will take over the Head Start programs run in those states. Currently, Federal funds go directly to the Head Start administrative organizations within the states-the new legislation would make it a part of block grants to the states. House Republicans say that the states would not be allowed to siphon the funds off for other purpose (

). Oppoents say that this is an attempt to dismantle the program. Additionally, there is a specific provision to allow those Head Start programs which are housed on the properties of religious organizations to hire based on the "faith" of an applicant. This could be, in my estimation, the thin end of the wedge in the "faith-based initiatives" program of this administration-putting religion into the earliest level of education seems rather sinister to me.
