A hush puppy
As in shoe?
OK, what have you said?
Yeah, I forgot there was a shoe brand by that name.
Hush puppies are balls of cornbread with other spices that are fried, and traditionally served with Southern dishes, such as catfish and other fried seafood like shrimp and oysters. I had some left over from some crabcakes I'd picked up to go from a restaurant.
My understanding is they developed when cooks would be preparing food, especially outdoors, and the dogs would all be whining/barking for food. So the cook would toss pieces of fried cornbread to the them, to hush the puppies.
Some are plain, others have all sorts of stuff mixed with them.
I love them with cocktail sauce.
