Except for the New Yorker subway occasionally when I lived there, I've never taken any public transportation in the US.

Why do they call it the "New Yorker subway"?

Wouldn't the "New York Subway" work just as well?

I hate those New York people. I hate the way they call their subways "The New Yorker Subway"

I think Kickycan, Joe Nation, Blatham, and Roberta are behind this.

"THEY" do not call the subway the New Yorker subway. THEY call it the subway or the train. THEY ain't too thrilled with you either, gus. THEY ain't behind nuthin'. But I'm behind you, and I'm gaining on you--FAST.

coming to kingston was a lucky choice for us . while i didn't have to take a ferry to work , we have a free ferry sailing from downtown kingsto to wolfe island - the largest of the "thousand islands" - and from there we can take horne's ferry to new york state .
taking a ferry ride on a warm summer evening is always a nice break .

My commute is long (50 miles each way) but not particularly miserable. I enjoy listening to music or the news, eat my breakfast on the way to work. It's a straight shot. I used to have someone who road with me, but she quit to be a stay-at-home mom.

Yeah, you get him, Boida.

Swimpy that's quite a commute: 50 miles one way! Must be especially
hard in the winter.

Only when I get caught in a storm, which is rare. The I take road is a major highway that is well maintained.

When I taught at university, I had drive (at least) twice weekly 40 miles each direction.
Took me in the morning about 40 mins .... and 10 mins more through the city. Back in the afternoon: 45 mins through the city, then 30 mins more.

But every time when I really had to be there at a certain time (e.g. oral examinations for the BA), I came either a lot too early or ...

For a couple of years I commuted between Hamilton (Ontario) and Toronto to work. I'd catch a Hamilton city bus a couple of blocks from home and take it downtown where I would wait for a GO (Government of Ontario) bus to Toronto (with luck, this part of the trip would only take an hour). In Toronto I'd get off at Union Station and take the subway north. If the weather was good I'd walk from the subway to my job, if raining or snowing I'd connect to another bus and get a little closer. The commute took me almost 2 hours each way but I loved my job and didn't want to give it up. My boss didn't want to lose me either but could tell the long commute was taking it's toll. When "raise" time came around he asked if I would be interested in working for the same $ but coming in an hour later in the morning (and leaving at the same time). I jumped at it.

My worst commute was in a snowstorm that took the GO buses off the road. We were bussed from the GO bus station in Toronto to the train station and put on trains headed west. We had to leave the train in Burlington and take buses to Hamilton where most of the city buses were also not running. I managed to get one of the last buses on the main route which let me off many blocks from home and I had to walk in a tire track on the street to make it through the snow. Suddenly I heard an engine behind me and could see a lighted chicken coming at me in the dark.* Someone had called Hamilton BBQ for take out and their crazy driver was making a delivery!

* The delivery cars had lit up chickens strapped to their roof.

Houston has a train line now. It is currently expanding the service. Only problem, they run at the same level as the cars. Numerous accidents already.

Yes, Edgar, I've taken the train to work too, and it definately beats the bus. Too bad about the accidents, I hope they get that sorted out soon.

Taking the ferry to work could be fun. At least, you'd never have to worry about icy streets in the winter!

I wonder if Gus has ever ridden on a ferry or a train? He seems to have been transportation deprived.

Tai Chi, a two-hour commute? Each Way? That would've killed me! I'm glad your boss let you come in an hour later!

But here's the best mode of transportation that I've heard mentioned yet:

taking the ferry in the winter was always a lot of fun . the ferry breaking through the iceflow and hearing the crunching of the ice was always a bit exiting .
also when i made it to school late in the winter , a had a good excuse Laughing
heavy fog was a different story because it meant i had a long walk ahead of me . it would take almost an hour to get to the other side of the elbe river by way of the tunnel under the river - there was no bus-service Sad
i had to walk to the tunnel entrance , take the elevator down , walk about 15 minutes to cross the tunnel , up the elevator and off to school .
