What can you tell a son when he just lost a friend to bird flu virus? He keeps crying and asks for his friend, the latter was so fragile and he had to go overseas to see family.. when he was going, i PROMISED my son that he would return soon and now that he doesn't return, what do i say? i'm so confused and sad...

There are so many variables here that we don't know. How old is your son? How old was his friend? What sort of religious beliefs does your family have?

You can't take away your son's pain, but you can let him know that you respect his grief.

You might also admit that you made a foolish promise; that you are not in control of the universe.

Words aren't a lot of use for ending grief. Compassion is.

It will be better that you tell him the truth, and explain him that everyone has to go to god one day. I am sure that he will understand.
