I feel in love with classic Russian art when I visited Russia in July 2000. I took a few photos at several art museums that I will share on this forum, and welcome anybody else that wishes to share the classic art of Russia. Most of all, I would like to hear comments and opinions on the art works. c.i.
This is the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow where I took most of the photos of Russian classic art. c.i.
This is one of many large murals at the Tretyakov. c.i.
If you would post a link to the museums, it would be great.
Here's the grandaddy of them all (I have the Abrams coffee table book):
THE HERMITAGE MUSEUM IN ST. PETERSBURG
A tapestry from 1722 of St. Peter preparing for a battle:
There are several links through Google, but here's one. c.i.

LW, I vaguely remember that painting, but there are so many at the Hermitage that it's impossible to take in and remember too many during our few hour visit. c.i.
Their site is all in Russian, but here it is:

We are very lucky in Toronto. The Hermitage has, for some wonderfully unknown reason, agreed to show their works at our Art Gallery of Ontario, while not permitting the works to travel elsewhere.
I'll have to get hamburger to post here. He and mrs. hamburger have visited the AGO to see The Hermitage shows, and been to The Hermitage in between. I know mrs. hamburger was very taken with the works there.
Wasn't there just a rather extraordinary film made at The Hermitage?
I was lucky to have been in Ontario when they had a show on a collection of Renoir paintings. I was there in 1997, but can still picture the National Gallery in my mind's eye. It's a beautiful place. c.i.

Now that's appreciation!
The National Gallery in Ottawa is very beautiful.
Geeesh, it was slow accepting my post, so I tried to move into another program. Didn't know I clicked it three times! Sorry. c.i.
The server really slowed down about ten minutes during that time -- I couldn't log back in.
Lightwizard -- in that painting of the man on horseback that you posted -- that's Czar Peter I (the 'Great'). Did you mean St. Peter?
No, a typo in a way. That's Peter the Great. Although I'm sure St. Peter is also quite capable of some battles.
Here's a little trivia. I was able to visit Peter the Great's tomb when I visited St Petersburg at the Peter and Paul Fortress. We also saw Peter the Great's ship. c.i.
Re Peter the Great: Didn't I hear the Russian Orthodox Church recently canonized Tsar Nicholas II & Family? Maybe Peter the Great is an Orthodox Saint, too?
Thanks for the pikshurs.
