Penny has made it to Cambodia! She's visiting with a friend of mine and will be joining her on a trip to Indonesia.

Penny is truly remarkable. I met her in Chicago two years ago when she was traveling with Walter. Walter, C.I., Penny and me had breakfast together in a coffee shop across the street from Chicago's Art Institute.

@dagmaraka,
Okay. She was alive and well, as of April 8. Last sighted enrout to Indonesia. Indonesia. That's pirate country, right?

She's been captured by pirates, and nobody seems to care. That's life. On top of the world one day, forgotten the next.

@roger,
Indeed. The last we heard was dagmaranka's hearsay from April ...

(And I don't hope, the booklet with notes, letters, cards etc from all those years is in the hand of the pirates as well!)

@Walter Hinteler,
That would be a shame, Walter. I hope we hear about Penny soon (and not from a late night news report).

Not that I've ever heard, roger. But it's the launching off place of "people smugglers" (of asylum seekers, by boat, to Oz) & also illegal fishing activities (off the northern Oz coast.)

(I've really enjoyed my visits to Indonesia. Been there a number of times now.)

It depends on where in Indonesia one goes. The northeast coast of the island of Sumatra is not a nice place . . . piracy in the area is concentrated in the Straits of Malacca. But if she had already made it Cambodia, there was no reason for her to have gone near Sumatra or the Straits of Malacca. I'm betting she found a cute Javanese beach boy, and she holed up somewhere . . .

@Setanta,
Piracy? (Of the holding ships to ransom variety?) Are you certain of that, Setanta?

@msolga,
Oh yeah . . . there were a great many complaints about it in recent years, that the navies of Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore were doing nothing. Until the eruption of piracy as a cottage industry on the east coast of Africa, the Straits of Malacca were the most dangerous place in the world for piracy.

@Setanta,
Surprised Not much media coverage of such goings on in this part of the world.

But back to Penny.
