My Ipod is over three years old (Black and white screen). It has 3,264 songs on it so far. My songs are also on my hard drive. They are also burned on 4 DVD-Rs. And I still have (but never use) the original CDs.
Never had a bit of trouble, but I believe the redundancy is prudent.
I've heard horror stories about suddenly dead batteries and the outrageous replacement cost, but so far so good.
Hope I didn't just jinx myself.

Sheesh, no sympathy at all.
Are you insane? I have the CDs!
So, have you burned everything you've downloaded from itunes?
dyslexia wrote:what's an Itune or for that matter, whats' an Ipod?
They are but foot soldiers in the army of Satan, sent down to earth to infiltrate our societies and enslave all who inhabit the planet earth.
I haven't downloaded anything from iTunes, and I never will. Those evil JACKALS!
So, all of the music on your ipod is music you already own on cd?
Greyfan's got a good point -- if you're not willing to occupy the hard drive space with the tunes, make sure to upload them all from CD as mp3s (not as ACC files), and then you can burn a buttload of them onto a single disc. So that, when you lose your Ipod, or it crashes, or it's stolen, or you break it -- it won't take three days of feeding CDs into your computer again to restore your collection.
Ah, now that's a good tip. Thanks, PDog and thanks Greyfan.
Oh, and one more thing.
STEVE JOBS IS THE DEVIL INCARNATE! DON'T FORGET WHO TOLD YOU FIRST!
DON'T FORGET WHO TOLD YOU FIRST, RIGHT AFTER MONA SIMPSON!
(Do you know who Mona Simpson is?)
I thought you were referring to a character on "The Simpsons."
I guess not.
Oh now I see. It's his sister. SHE'S EVIL TOO THEN!
I think there IS a character on the Simpsons named Mona, actually.
I'm talking about the author Mona Simpson though; she's Steve Jobs' half-sister and clearly, through fictional portraits of him, thinks he's the devil incarnate (and makes a convincing case).
He makes nice computers though.
She's not evil! She's from Wisconsin!
Well, now that I finally got all my CDs (over 100 CDs--it took quite a while) burned on my iPod again, it now doesn't turn on or off.
This thing is a giant turd squeezed directly out of satan's assh*le directly into my mouth.
Carry on.
(I'm glad I listened to JoeNation about the ZenPlayer)

Come on kicky. You're far too computer savvy to believe that. You know you've screwed up somewhere with your ipod. You just haven't figured out where or when.
go to your ipod help section. It'll show you how to work out that kink.
