Forked tongue clapping mpeg courtesy of terminal packet loss:

http://www.viewfromuphere.com/cecil/forkedtongue.mpg

That tongue mod is actually currently illegal in the U.S.. My friend Cecil wants bioluminescent patches on his back. I'd be game for a hidden gill patch for breathing underwater. People all over the world have tattos, piercings, etc. So, with the progress of technology, what's the future for body mod's?

Also, why do people like them? What would you do, if you could do any [real or fictional] body mod? Do you think the governement should regulate body mod's? Is it wrong for people to want to change themselves?

I find the subject somewhat distasteful, but I try to adhere to a live-and-let-live approach. Hack away, kids!

I dunno. I Think gills would be cool. I see why some would think it was inethical but I porbably would have gills if I could. that'd be cool.

Thinking about it I dont think people should be allowed drastic changes. Gills wouldnt really be because they would be descrete. i dunno

I think that adding something like gills goes into a different kind of body mod than tattoos and piercings. If the gills were actually functional and allowed one to breath under water, then i think that would fall into a mutation type of catagory. Not to mention the scientific breakthrough that would represent.

Personaly, i feel bad sometimes about what i give my body to digest let alone thinking about putting a steal pin through my tounge. I even dont like getting drunk because it puts my body in a state it is not supposed to be in. But, if tattoos and piercings make others happy, then i say more power to them.

I think the discussion of adding gills show a certain naivete about human anatomy, but then I don't claim to be on the cutting edge (if you'll pardon the expression) in this regard...

I have one you might like;

I call it a "set".
It is a neural implant contacting through a small cap placed on the top (rear) of the head.
It has the properties of a phone, radio, computer, information storage, record keeping device, and much more, all combined in a tiny package, directly connected to your brain.
There are chips available for it, crystal in composition which slide into the "set", providing immediate knowledge of any language, or subject that you wish for any reason to understand.
The "set" allows making a recording of the visual, audio, and even emotional components of any event, meeting, or concert, etc. that you wish to keep "current" for re-experiencing (the possibilities are endless).
While wearing the "set" one can control light and music levels in one's home as well as anything else that is controlable remotely (it uses radio frequency, not infra red, but can generate infra red if required).
As for the phone, you become "aware' of the call, and if you take it you hear it internally, and "think" your responses which are issued in digital form back to the caller.

Currently the "set' is only available in my stories, but lets face it, it is only a matter of time.
Imagine never needing to go to school to learn information.
Life can be about experiences, not about knowledge.
But we must also be careful, because like some of the "knowledge" on the internet you could be sold a chip of useless garbage for your head!

I've got very mixed feelings on this. I don't have a problem with tattoos and piercings, am seriously opposed to cosmetic surgery, and worry about things like the tongue split. I've been thinking about it for a while - why am I so opposed to cosmetic surgery, and not bothered by tattoos?

The tongue split concerns me as I'm not sure that there might not be some long-term negative implications. I was listening to an interview where they were talking about this - they didn't really know what would happen to the muscle involved.

Beth, I'm guessing we'll find out some long-term effects down the road, eh?

I'm a little up in the air about the whole body modification thing too. I have had friends with all sorts of piercings and tattoos and one guy had a 'flayed <um, er> penis'. I never saw the modified penis.

In the greater scheme of things I believe if it's not hurting anyone but one's self - go for it.

Neck elongation and footbinding, among other practices, have modified human bodies for a long time.

Yeah, but this is fictional-allowed. I want to know what people would do to themselves if there were -no limits-. Assume science is ultimately advanced, but that you're still making permenant modifications to your body.

BoGoWo- yeah, but that would suck if it broke!

Ugh, foot binding is disgusting. Iv'e always asked myself if I was born into that culture if I would go along with it. I'm also grossed out by naked victorian woman's torso's - you can see the damage the corsets did to their body. Also, on Betty Paige. She's pretty, but clearly has some corset damage.http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Cafe/1373/betty/frnzx-mega-betty-26.gif http://www.geocities.com/Paris/Cafe/1373/betty/frnzx-mega-betty-32.gif

BUT REMEMBER: A FITTED corset is essential for waist training comfort.

It was common for women's ribs to break under the shear pressure of the lacing and sometimes even causing premature death. "A Pairs paper reported the following story in 1859: " A young woman, whose thin waist was admired by all her rivals, died two days after the ball. What happened? Her family decided to find out the cause of her sudden death at such a young age and had autopsy performed. The findings were rather surprising: the liver had been pierced by three of the girl's ribs!" This shows how one may die at the age of twenty three, not of typhus or in childbirth but because of a corset." -Support and Seduction, by Beatrice Fontanel.

So, let me say that I disagree with uncomfortable/biologically unhealthy body mods. Of course, it's your body right Smile.

I think it would be cool to have retractable camoflauge hair. Any length, any color, any time. I could make it look like a brick wall if I wanted, or like a painting. That would be fun.

Hah.
And the public worries about genetically modified organisms!

Seeing how each generation has to shock and disturb the one before it,
it's pretty clear the young reb's will be DNA-splicing real soon now...

Husker;"a guy I know has a bolt in the man tool!"
the next itteration of "birth controll" the male "chastity bolt"!

Portal..; "that would suck if it broke!"
Into every life, a little "down time" must fall!

And on the subject of body decoration, in general;
all would be participants in piercing, tatooing, etc. should first consider their appearance, at the age of 90, lying on a slab in a local morgue, with all that fine work under the influence of wrinkles, and decay.
Unimportant - but, odd!
