Dear Friend,
...I'm proud of what we've been able to achieve already because of your support.
Together, we've led on the important issues facing America in this election. We've told Congress to stop the escalation and end the war in Iraq; we've introduced bold plans to reduce global poverty and help win the war against terrorism; and we're the only campaign to have laid out a detailed plan to bring universal health care to every man, woman and child in America.
And just last week, I announced my energy plan and called on (America to begin taking aggressive action to stop global (warming.
...And in the process of stopping global warming, my plan would help spur a new energy economy to break our dependence on foreign oil and create 1 million new jobs.
But stopping global warming is going to require a commitment from all of us?-industries, government, and individuals?-to work together in common cause, and to make some tough choices.
For example, coal-fired power plants are a bulwark of American electricity production, but they produce a full third of America's carbon dioxide emissions. There are 150 new coal plants planned across the country that, once built, will be with us for at least the next 60 years. If these plants are constructed with old technology they will significantly increase our carbon emissions at a time when we need to be significantly reducing them. We can make sure that doesn't happen.
That's why today I am expanding upon my energy plan by calling for a ban on the construction of new coal-fired power plants that lack the ability to capture their emissions?-and making an historic commitment to helping scientists research and test ways to capture carbon dioxide emissions and store them underground.
But making these plans a reality and bringing truly transformational change to America on issues like health care and global warming is going to take all of us working together to win the presidency.
...Thank you for taking action to change our country.
Sincerely,
John Edwards
