@oralloy,
The subject oralloy is the chattering classes on the edge of their seats again trembling in anticipation as the drama queens exercise their hysterias.

It is an ideal state to be in in order to derive the maximum benefit from the ads which are carefully threaded into the narrative.

We want to relax the cuts to military spending while cementing all the other spending cuts into place.

The terminus of that direction is that there is only military spending and the economy on a permanent war footing.

We don't need to go quite that far, but we're going to need a huge arms buildup when we start surrounding China.

@oralloy,
Oh yes! More military spending is obviously vital!

Did you read last week's story about the nuclear bomb which was very nearly detonated over North Carolina after a B52 bomber malfunctioned?

Hiroshima x 260. Bye-bye, NYC.

Yes.

3.8 megatons, 50/50 fission fraction, set for a full-yield groundburst.

It would have left a mark.

Not really.

But the local damage would have been extensive and the fallout plume would have been extremely bad.

Not only the fallout plume; everyone was on a hair-trigger at that time, Reds under the beds, communist threat, armed bombers in the air constantly etc. The Russians would have got the blame, and before anything could be sorted out, ka-blooey, goodnight Vienna, Moscow, Washington, and most other places.

The buildup is mostly still on the drawing board. We've got a long way to go and many new weapons to develop before we can fully ensure that our allies are safe from Chinese aggression.

Some of the new weapons being developed include Mach-6 hypersonic cruise missiles that will be able to scream into a large country and take out heavily-defended targets via kinetic impact.

We're also using drone technology to develop unmanned stealth bombers. First up will be medium bombers that can take off from and land on aircraft carriers.

This is why it is so vital to relax the military spending cuts in the sequester while cementing the other spending cuts into place.

Nah. I think they would have called it as a Broken Arrow.

The place was not of huge strategic significance. There would have been no sign of a Soviet attack before the explosion. And they would have had reports of one our own bombers crashing at that location, carrying bombs of the precise yield of what the explosion would have been.

Well that depends. While global nuclear war was unlikely, a 3.8 MT groundburst with a 50/50 fission fraction would have been quite unpleasant.

The fallout plume would still be a no-go area even today I bet.

And who knows how many people would have been killed by the blast.

@McTag,
Have you seen, Mac, that Obarmy has announced that a government shutdown will have a "real economic impact"? As if he would be saying such things if it didn't.

I have watched a number of American Presidents in my time, as an interested bystander, often amazed, but this is the first one that ever addressed the electorate as if they were just learning not to stamp in puddles in their best shoes.

I'll say one thing for you oralloy. You clarify the issues. A State is a military entity. First and last.

True, but don't forget that this is an electorate who demand everyone be able to keep and carry guns so they will be free from gunfire.

@McTag,
Did you see the phalanx of Goths jumping up and down in wherever it was Utd was playing. It was below zero, it was pissing down and half a gale was blowing. They probably had their trousers on but we couldn't see whether they did and the effect was that they didn't.

The subs were in insulated clothing with blankets over their knees like you see in Southport when the ginkoes are being wheeled out beside the boating lake.
