The coachs, the running books, the experienced runners whom I know (like George, who has been a consistently positive voice) all say the same thing:
Don't start out too fast.
Watch how much you drink, use thirst as an indicator.
In the middle stretchs of First Ave, save something for the end.
In the last three miles, it's your mind, not your thighs, that will lift you.
I'll talk about all this in a moment but first:

and ten seconds
aheadof me at the 35K mark (about 22 miles)
but then I whipped her fanny in those last miles
and pulled away to finish more than two minutes ahead of her!!

More tonight, but here's a hint: You know you are in trouble when you are wearing a 4:45 hours pace team tag at the beginning but you are running with people wearing 3:30 hours tags and at the end you are being passed by a couple wearing banana suits.
