Please can someone help me? What is powdered alum and what is the British equivalent?

alum is a mineral salt (also corrosive) you can add to pickled vegetable
in order to keep their crisp consistency. It's also a component used
in deodorants, and alum sticks help with razor cuts to stop the blood flow.

Where would you use alum powder for?
