Moscow- In the dispute over the proposed US missile defence system Russia has threatened to unilaterally withdraw from a treaty on the destruction of short- and medium-range nuclear missiles, a report said Thursday. General Yuri Baluyevsky, head of the Russian general staff, said that Russia's decision depends on the future behaviour of Washington, Itar-Tass news agency reported.
The general described the proposed positioning of part of the defence system in Europe as inexplicable.
The Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty agreed between the US and the Soviet Union in 1987 set out the destruction of all short- and medium-range nuclear missiles in Europe. This was accomplished by 1991.
The treaty can be withdrawn from, the general said, when one side presents convincing evidence. Baluyevsky said there is such evidence in that many countries are today developing medium range missiles.
Bushie hit the ground running on this issue. He reversed many decades of international agreement on non-proliferation. He attacked arms control treaties, germ warfare treaties, threatened a new generation of nukes and threatened to resume underground nuclear testing. He went so far as to tell China he would not mind if they resumed and Putin said then he would have to resume. Clinton had Korean families united and kissing and hugging relatives they had not seen in 50 years. Bushie reversed Clinton's gains in N. Korea and pushed them to the limit. A position he has now been forced to reverse back.
