Snood- For instance, you mention "Ebony". I have absolutely no problem with that publication. Every magazine has a niche audience, a group for which the magazine is designed. "Good Housekeeping" is geared to housewives" "GQ" to upscale males, etc. Nothing wrong with that. These are private enterprises targeting their content (and ads) to a specific market.

The black caucus, on the other hand, is a group of legislators, who are supposed to represent ALL of the people, not just their black constituents. They are part of the government, not a private enterprise, and therein lies the difference.

I would have no problem with an organization made up of black professionals, CEOs etc. That is their choice. Do you see the difference?

While I do wonder how many Incitatuses (who was a Senator, after all) there are in the horse caucus, I can see several there which might...say...want you to be Hispanic...or female...or democratic and californian....to join.



I can see why people may wish to get their backs up re a black caucus, but it would seem self evident to me that there is more reason and justification for a hispanic, women's, black and even horse (I assume horses are a real minority in the American government?) caucus than there currently is for a white one.


However, I suppose you who are arched of back have a good technical point, and are likely to enjoy yourselves in the process.

dlowan- I am curious as to the regulations for membership are on these other caucuses. There are just a few that seem to specify a specific group, but most of them apprently dwell on particular issues.

I also have no problem with a black caucus, discussing areas of particular interest to black people. My difficulty was the barring of a white legislator who wanted to become involved in this group, and was barred from joining.

Not to mention that he is a largly black area. Most of his voting base in his area appear to be black. If thats so, then it can only do them good to have him join. If they discuss issues that are important to that black community then he is right there to hear them and maybe even have a chance to help them. With him being denied access to his voting base they are only harming themselves.

Just when we got done celebrating MLK day. What ever happened to men should be judged by the content of their person and not the color of their skin?

Personally, I have no problem with Black Entertainment Television and Ebony. Some subcultures in the US are almost exclusively nurtured by Blacks, and I have no problem with dedicating media outlets to particular subcultures. The other examples I find provincial and closed-minded, but I wouldn't go as far as calling them racist. The term "racist" has been devalued by overuse, so I won't add to this inflation by applying the term to the Black Congressional Caucus, the Miss Black America pageant, or the Black History Month.

It took long enough for white people to get over their hangups about race. I'm sure Blacks will eventually get there too. We shall overcome someday.

I made this suggestion years ago at Abuzz and I still stand by it.

Make it illegal to breed within your race for 10 years and then there will be only one race.
