Bush Attacks Iranian Consulate--trying to provoke them?

It was reported today that American troops attacked a Iranian Consulate (according to the Iranians and the Kurds who hosted them) or a diplomatic mission (according to the Bush administration).

The Kurds are pissed. The Iranians are pissed. And it is clear that this is not intended to bring cooperation with the countries surrounding Iraq (as suggested by the Iraq study group) or a diplomatic solution at all?

Is Bush hoping to start a war with Iran? Attacking diplomats is a very good way to provoke a crisis.

ERBIL, Iraq, Jan. 11 ?- American troops backed by attack helicopters and armored vehicles raided an Iranian diplomatic office in the dead of night early Thursday and detained as many as six of the Iranians working inside.

The raid was the second surprise seizure of Iranians by the American military in Iraq in recent weeks and came a day after President Bush bluntly warned Iran to quit meddling in Iraqi affairs.

"This is a flagrant violation of the Vienna convention on consular relations. It is also not clear how this fits in with American statements that Washington respects the sovereignty of Iraq," it said.

U.S. forces were on Friday holding five Iranians they detained during the raid on the Iranian liaison office in the city of Arbil, in Iraq's Kurdish north.

Iran and U.S. officials say the office did not have formal diplomatic status. The United States accuses Tehran of backing Shi'ite militias in Iraq and fomenting violence there.
