Lots of these in northern Michigan. Vicious little pests too. Highly territorial and quite likely to make their home in yours. Open season all year.
Last spring while turkey hunting I had a juvenile red squirrel almost walk right onto me. He stopped when I moved slightly, looked me over for a long time from just inches away. Very curious little guy out of the nest likely for the very first time.

Thanks for the photo, cjhsa. I like squirrels. The city and country kinds. There are some black squirrels in my home borough of the Bronx.

cjhs, Is that Alvin, Theodore, or Simon?
djjd, Yup, definitely an "eye of the beholder" thing.
And while we're in a batty frame of mind, here's a fruit bat (flying fox).

Confession time: Amphibians make me uncomfortable. Even some pictures of them can make me feel uncomfortable. I'm trying to overcome this so that they are fairly represented here. Do they care? Nope. Are they grateful. Hell, no. Here are two photos:

Male seahorses take fatherhood to a whole new level. They are the ones who get pregnant and give birth. Here's a slender seahorse:

Symbolic gesture. The bluebird of happiness. Happy a2k is back.
BTW, I was originally gonna show a photo of a clam for "happy as a clam," but I couldn't find a photo of a clam that looked even remotely happy. Go figure.

Okay. I'm aware that I've been talking to myself for the past few days. I don't mind. I'm enjoying looking for and posting pictures. Not hurting anybody.
Here's a photo of a thoroughbred horse. My favorite, Secretariat, fondly known as Big Red.

It does seem a painting, and I meant to spell that 'loved'.
I wonder if I still have some fantastic NYTimes horse photos. Sigh, which computer, this one or Defuncto...

OK, I looked and I lost those, they're either on my old computer or a friend's.
Probably in the NYT archves, but that takes a slip of moolah to get into.

Speaking of horses..... I have always, since I was a child, loved Appaloosas.
But, through my niece's love of horses, I have learned of a great many breeds I never knew about as a kid. One of my new favorites is the Friesan - a black beauty with massive amounts of mane hair and long hair around the hooves.....

osso, Glad to find another Secretariat fan. I have a tape of his triple crown season. Still watch the Belmont Stakes in awe.

I got it from a site that calls itself a photo history of Richmond. Maybe it's photo with some retouching.
littlek, my cousin had an appaloosa. Gorgeous animal. I rode him once. Great experience. The Friesan is spectacular--and new to me. I'm going to look to see what other photos I can find of the Friesan. Wow!

I have to say, there aren't many stunning photos of the friesians online. There are some stunning photos of them in my niece's books......

"Pharlap" was (supposedly) murdered by American racing syndicates on his one visit to the U.S.
