Is that a wild boar or warthog?

I know, I could look it up...

Wild hogs are interesting in themselves - I gather quite the pest in the US.
Primo food in Italy

The bird is glorious.

Warthog.

You're right. Wild boars can be kinda pesky.

better a wild boar, than a crashing bore

here's a satin bowerbird, they build these little structures and adorn them with feathers and flowers to attract a mate

Different bowerbirds are partial to different colors. The guy who built this bower likes white. I've seen films of the females inspecting the bowers. The guy looks anxious. She's hard to please. She looks. She looks. She leaves. Dem's da breaks.

We have bowerbirds close to here. My friend curses them because they steal all the blue flowers from his garden.

I have seen the nests in the wild, but the birds themselves are very shy. Amazing what they will collect. Onion skin, bottle caps, insect shells. where do you find Onionskin in the middle of the bush.

there is a theory that their eye color determines what colored objects they collect.

Dadpad, I've seen nature shows about these birds. They'll take anything if it's the right color. I saw a nest with car keys in it.

Here's a satin bower bird--with blue eyes. Probably stealing your friend's blue flowers as I write.

Did you approve of the platypuses I picked? They have gorgeous coats and unusual faces.

roberta: I love platypii. they are my totem. in my next life I will be a platypus...or I possibly was in a past life, I dunno.

I love the way their bills are just like stuck on the front. Almost as an after thought. Kinda like god said "hey wtf, we got this bill left over after the duck and goose making program,... what the hell! ok gimme some of that "hard as nails" glue and a bit of silastic and well use it up on one of them water critters we was fooling with in oz"

Yup, their bills do look stuck on. But unlike ducks and geese, their nostrils are at the end of the bill, which makes it more of a nose than a bill. They do look a bit like a bunch of spare parts.

My first encounter with a platypus was at the Bronx Zoo. There was a sign saying, "See the duckbilled platypus." There was a long line of people waiting to see the amazing creature from down under.

Here's another egg-laying mammal--the echidna.

Very Happy

I love em, too, dadpad.

They are a truly wondrous & utterly unique invention, platypii!

I've seen a few wildlife shows about platypuses, but they remain a mystery to me. Maybe there's simply nothing to compare them to--certainly nothing familiar to me. Can't say I love 'em. But they fascinate me.

Gonna throw in another animal photo--one totally unrelated to platypuses. The only one of the big cats not represented here:

Hey, Roberta! Check out the newest babies at Melbourne Zoo. (8 week-old Sumatran tiger cubs.) Are they beautiful, or what?

Seeing all the nests makes me think this is a fine place to post this nest....

It is an eagle's nest salvaged from a broken tree. It is under wraps for a few more days before it goes on display. The nest is said to be of similar size to a Mini Cooper.

Someone is sneaking out a few early shots though - like this close up.

You can read about the nest here: http://www.jacksonbottom.org/EagleNest.htm

That's so sad though...they will come back and their house will be gone! Damn those natural disasters! But I guess we were able to at least keep it from being destroyed.

Thanks for the tiger babies, msolga. They are, indeed, beautiful.

Thanks, boomer, for the eagle's nest. Too bad it fell out of the tree. The eagles will have to build another one somewhere.

djjd, Nope, that's the only photo of a bobcat. Thanks. It's a doozy.

In keeping with the eagle's nest, here's a photo of a golden eagle in flight.
