djjd, That's a cicada? I've seen other photos of them. They didn't look this good. What kind of jellyfish are those? They're beautiful. Are they dangerous?

Speaking of dangerous, here's a coral snake, one of the most deadly serpents in the Americas.

It's hard to pick just one of those baby elephants that Chai posted, each so precious (er, sorry, slaps self).

Chai and Osso, As I rearranged my elephant collection last night, I thought about including elephants here. Glad to see them. Magnificent animals.

Baby elephants are beyond cute. Did I ever tell you about the running battle I had with my mother--I wanted a baby elephant; she said no. Okay, so we lived in an apartment building in da Bronx. A minor detail. The answer remained no. I lost that one. (Same result when I wanted a horse.)

osso, Those photos are stunning. Thanks.

dadpad, Your wish is my command. I kinda like the photo below. Found a pic of two platypuses mating. Shocked Things appeared to be happening sideways! Shocked Live and loin, I always say.

the pictures of the elephants reminded me of a trip to the toronto zoo about twenty years ago

the elephants and hippos had enclosures next to each other and one young elephant took great delight in picking up a stick and poking a young hippo through a gap in the fence, the you ng hippo would cry, the mother would come over and bellow then the mother elephant would come over and bellow, they'd both lead their "kids" away, but about five minutes later the hippo would be back lying in the shade of the fence and the elephant would be picking up his stick and haeding for the gap

kids, the same all over

Gila monsters are venomous. The first time I saw one (at the Bronx Zoo) I thought it looked like a beaded bag in a lizard shape.

What I find so beautiful about the baby elephant pictures is how the mother and aunties hover so close and protectively.

Unconditional Love.

I love elephants and thought I would post this.

It's my desktop background picture and is "beach art" of a troupe of elephants, made from driftwood.
I know they're not "real" animals, but I thought it was worth posting all the same.

I think it's in South Africa, Chai. I received it in an email from a friend who works out there. I may be wrong though.
I'll ask him, next time we correspond.

Chai, Elephants are exceptional in lots of ways. The mothers, aunts, older sisters all nurture the babies. It is a beautiful thing to see. I was watching a show the other night in which a camera was hidden in a polar bear den. Watched as the newborn baby, eyes still not open, crawled around on the mother and how she tenderly nestled it in her giant paw. Brought a tear to this tough Noo Yawker's eye.

Osso, Speaking of mothers, I'll say to you what my mother said to me. NO, you may not have a baby elephant.

Malik, what an extraordinary work. Thanks for posting it here.

We've been posting some of the flashier looking animals here. Truth is that I see beauty in most animals. They are what they are. No pretense. No malice. No meanness.

Here's an animal I enjoy seeing. Not a great beauty. But it is what it is:

And for a change of pace, a yellow grosbeak:

For 12 years the baby stays with the mother.
