@hingehead,
Interesting. I don't know anything about antlers, but is the guy on the right the oldest?

@ossobuco,
Hi Osso, my reading of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antler would indicate that antlers are shedded annually, so size is not an indication of age, but a result of genetics and nutrition/condition. Perhaps? Hadn't realised that only caribou and reindeer have antlers on the females.

@hingehead,
I don't think I ever thought about antlers on females. Huh.

@ossobuco,
wikipedia said "Antlers are considered one of the most exaggerated cases of male secondary sexual traits in the animal kingdom"

Well, men can have boobs.

The wayward emperor penguin dubbed Happy Feet who was discovered on a beach in New Zealand in June will soon be heading home in style.

A New Zealand scientific research ship will drop the world-famous traveller off in sub-Antarctic waters when it departs in two weeks.

Happy Feet captured the world's imagination when he was found thousands of kilometres out of his comfort zone on New Zealand's Peka Peka Beach.

It was the first recorded sighting of an emperor penguin in New Zealand in more than 40 years.

Happy Feet has spent the past two months at Wellington Zoo, recovering from operations to remove sand and sticks from his stomach.

Now he is about to hitch a ride part-way home with New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. ...<cont>

@hingehead,
dj, That is one exceptionally cute bunny. Not gonna thud. Not gonna thud. I think the otters in the enclosure they're taking the pictures from are bored. Wonderful to look at too.

tsar, What a great pic--fox and flowers. Glad you like the wolves.

Enjoy your travels, c.i. Looking forward to your pictures.

That butterfly is breathtaking, hinge. Throwing in a wow. The owl pic has a tactile quality. I can kinda feel those feathers. Wonderful. As far as the deer go, I think the middle one is Bambi--all grown up. That eagle is saying, "Hey fish, here I come," but in Norwegian. Great shot.

Olga, Glad to hear that Happy Feet will be safely returned to his natural environment. I hope they give him a compass.

Very, very, very large mammal:

@Arella Mae,
Arella Mae, You are ablaze. I love dat stork. You don't have to be a raving beauty to be beautiful. I had no idea that puffins started out so cute and fuzzy. What is that lemur doing? Pretending to look through a glass of some kind? Mighty endearing. Now you've gone and done it. Do you know how much I love dem bonobos? Not as much as chimps, but close. What a baby.

Re the lynxes. Are those city names where the lynxes are or are they some kind of subspecies? Doesn't matter. Dem kitties is beyond cute.

BTW, my late, lamented Mikey (a mutt cat) was about the size of a small lynx. People would stare in disbelief. I miss that big lug.

@Roberta,
Yes, they are in zoos, one in Wisconsin and the others in Cincinnati. I am addicted to that www.zooborns.com site. Some of the most beautiful photos of babies and some adorable videos. I watched a baby loris drink from a bottle. It'll make your heart smile.

@djjd62,
Thank you! I totally missed that I used the incorrect word. I need new glasses I think. I love the daily B&O. But, I have to admit the otters have my heart.

You should check out the tiny baby newborn otter on www.zooborns.co, Definite thud alert though.
