@jcboy,
QWe have a possum that visits our back patio every so often. It comes for the Kibbles my wiofe leaves out ofr any stray cats. We named him "lips" and he stayed with us many a year. Hes gone now. (Got turned into road kill) < I think he was coming over the field and crossing the township road when he got smmooshed. All those years and he never gave a rats ass about whether we were near or not. At first hed just sidle off and later hed just look up and keep eating his kibbles.

Lips was a cool possum.

@farmerman,
We had one that came up every night for about a year. I called him Elvis. He was really strange looking. He had a deformed head but not one time was afraid of us. It was like he thought he was supposed to be here. Then one day, he just never came back.

@Arella Mae,
We don't have opossums in Oz, we have possums

Not sure how related the two are. Usually shy, but bastards if they take up residents in your roof. Scary as f*** if you catch one in a cage to relocate. But sweet when not threatened. At RMC Duntroon Officers Mess a cook I worked with used to feed them fruit after dinner was served. One night she was in hurry to get back to barracks to go out, so she left as soon as dining service stopped leaving me to cleanup. The possums followed her demanding their fruit.

@hingehead,
Well I did the research and they aren't at all related. They're called possums because Joseph Banks said they looked like American possums (what would you expect from a botanist Captain Cook?)

Scientifically speaking they are way cuter!

I have some photos somewhere of me in a cabin in the tablelands with one of these on my chest taking apple out of my mouth

@hingehead,
Oh definitely much cuter! Looks like they grow a lot bigger too! I'd love to see that photo if you ever find it.

Egret eyes longtom for dinner:
A great eastern egret flushes out a longtom amongst the flooded vegetation in Budgewoi lake, about 100km north of Sydney, on August 1, 2011.

@ossobuco,
ty Osso! I'm checking it out.

Wow! I had no idea that when an opposum plays dead it lets off a bad smell like a dead animal. Also had no clue they are immune to most snakes. And that answered my question as to why I see so many oppossums dead in the road. They were going to get dinner. Thanx osso!
