The Osprey Has Landed

At NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida, an adult osprey guards its young in a nest built on a platform in the Press Site parking lot. In the background is the 12,300-square-foot NASA logo painted on the side of the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The VAB and Press Site are located at the Turn Basin in Launch Complex 39, making it an ideal osprey nesting place. The Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge overlaps with Kennedy Space Center property and provides a habitat for many types of wildlife, including the osprey, and 330 species of birds. For information on the refuge, visit http://www.fws.gov/merrittisland/Index.

@Barry The Mod,
tsar, There are a number of jackal vulture pics. I assume they're all arguments over food. But this was the only one I found with the vulture hovering in midair. Love this shot. Glad you like it. (BTW, dem vultures is big.)

dj, Wonderful tactile quality to the bunny pic. You look at it and kinda know what they feel like. Otters are amazingly expressive. We usually get a sense of some thought going on--facial expressions and body language.

Barry, I once saw a osprey--in the flesh. I was sailing off the coast of Maine. They are large wonderful birds and are brilliant in the air. Thanks for the Floridian--guardian of its nest and it looks like it's guarding NASA too.

http://i.telegraph.co.uk/multimedia/archive/01935/cat-earial_1935239i.jpg
This cat was left clinging on to a television aerial 20ft in the air for three hours after falling off a roof. Peter Smith, 67, from Long Stratton, Norfolk, was woken by the sound of loud meowing and saw the cat when he opened his curtains. "My wife and I could hear this meowing that went on and on, so I looked out the window and was shocked to see a cat stuck on the aerial," he said. "It was next-door's cat and I think it must have been chasing a bird across the roof and fallen off. It was very scared and clinging on for dear life as the aerial is quite flimsy." Mr Smith's neighbour used a large ladder to reach his cat and the poor pet was brought down. "It was very shaken after the ordeal," added Mr Smith.

Shiley, a two year old male cheetah, chases a lure down a 330-foot track at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park. The fastest land animals will be showing off their speed every day at the Safari Park during Shiley's Cheetah Run, starting July 2. The new attraction shows guests the cheetah's astounding speed: 0 to 70 mph in just four seconds. There are three cheetahs that are trained to run off leash for Cheetah Run: Amara, Johari and Shiley. Each day, one of these cheetahs will run down a 330-foot straight track while chasing a mechanical lure attached to a toy.

(Osso......San Diego does have a great zoo. Still, when I'm elected president, ALL zoos will be abolished!!!)

@Irishk,
Irish, What's with the cats in jeopardy. I still haven't fully recovered from the cat on the balcony railing. Glad this cat was rescued. Poor ting. Be still my heart re the cheetah. I remember watching nature shows. They always showed the cheetah running in slow motion. I wanted to see it in non-slow motion. Then I caught a show where the cheetah was shown running. What happened? Where'd she go? Takes my breath away. (I'm beginning to get the feeling that this thread is not good for my health.)

dj, Is that bunny wearing a jacket? Saying a quick hi to the O. Hi O.

Himalayan monal pheasant (new to me. wow):

I love horses, but Dys always said that mules were smarter, tougher, stronger and worked harder than any horse that ever lived.

Damn, the first shot cut out the mule's head. This is a little better.
Stubborn critters.

@Diane,
That's a big mule! I didn't know squat about mules until JJ came along. Dys was right. They are all those things. JJ is starting to learn just how strong he really is. Sometimes I'm not sure that is a good thing. He still hasn't found his mule voice. He's still grunting like a gorilla. I can't wait until the day I can send him to Trainer Dave so I can ride him. I hear mules are a better ride than horses because they are more surefooted. It will be a big change from Big Mac! He is the trippingest horse!

Miss Roberta, nothing like looking out across a pasture or field and seeing such beautiful creatures move like they do!

@djjd62,
I love the bunnies but there is something (I don't know what) about those otters. Maybe it's just that I've never paid much attention to them before and now I see a whole new creature but I love dem!!!!!!!!!
