Barry, You've outdone yourself, especially in the G'night department. Do you know what kind of snake the gold colored reptile is? Its a beauty.

@hingehead,
Hah, I was just going to post that..

Here's what the SF Chronicle had to say in its caption -
"The Abominable Snow Crab: Census of Marine Life explorers have discovered a new, furry crab species south of Easter Island. Kiwa hirsuta was deemed so unusual that it warranted a whole new family designation, Kiwidae."

I'll check back in my records.
What that really means is I'll try to find the scrap of paper with the details on amoungst the hundreds of other bits of paper on my desk.
Meanwhile,The Fredster asked me to post this....

Ocelot, San Diego Zoo, California

Wild ocelots are gone from all U.S. states except Texas, driven out by human development. The elusive cats still roam the wilds of Central and South America, but there's little reliable data on their true numbers.

@Barry The Mod,
Barry, The ocelot is a rare beauty. The cormorant photo is spectacular. (They are amazing birds). The g'night pic makes me smile. As usual. I'm really really glad you showed up here.

@Irishk,
Two wonderful pics, Irish. The lion cubs are, well, babies. And the penguin is a spectaular shot. Perfect symmetry of the mama. Very cute baby.

Speaking of black and white mamas and babies--

omg, this fish has a transparent head.

http://images.nationalgeographic.com/wpf/media-live/photos/000/104/cache/fish-transparent-head-barreleye_10442_600x450.jpg

February 23, 2009--With a head like a fighter-plane cockpit, a Pacific barreleye fish shows off its highly sensitive, barrel-like eyes--topped by green, orblike lenses--in a picture released today but taken in 2004.

The fish, discovered alive in the deep water off California's central coast by the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), is the first specimen of its kind to be found with its soft transparent dome intact.

The 6-inch (15-centimeter) barreleye (Macropinna microstoma) had been known since 1939--but only from mangled specimens dragged to the surface by nets.
