saw this cool little bug while deadheading the asters, it was kind enough to hang around while went and got my camera

under the wings its body is black, it's hard to see the head because of the flower but it's a really bright yellow with big black eyes

@djjd62,
I never would have pegged it for a moth! But, it looks like the Virginia ctenuchid moth:

@littlek,
cool, if you look closely in my second photo you can see the feathery antennae, so i'm guessing you're right

it's a long way from home, if it's an east cost native, i'm near the detroit border

It's an infestation! One gorgeous bug after another. Thank you all for sharing these. What beauties. And an extra added attraction is that we get to see flowers too.

And moi here in the Big Apple? I saw a gigantic humongous cockroach last week. No camera, sorry.

I wonder what that is and if its species adapted to be intentionally the same color as its target flower of consumption.

I hear they like nectar... perhaps you should try putting some sugar water in a shallow bowl in the area where you last seen them several times.

@ossobuco,
That's the most unusual looking grasshopper I have ever seen. I wonder if she has a Twitter account?

Hindu devotees offer prayers in the temple for the betterment of their family and society as the temple has thousands of rats that are fed, protected, and worshipped throughout the whole year. It is regarded as auspicious if a rat runs across one's feet.

I don't know about the good luck and the running across my feet but I still think they're quite cute despite of their infamous history of help spreading plague and disease.

@tsarstepan,
Great article on the birth of two adorable ligers!

Liger cubs were born at a private zoo in Taiwan, but the illegal crossbreeding (lion and tigress) could result in the zoo keeper being fined around $1,500 for the birth of the ligers.

You guys have been might busy today. Not only gorgeous bugs, but seals, ligers, who can keep up.

osso, I checked out the blog. Wonderful pictures. Thanks for sharing that info.

This is a sea hare, which is a kind of sea slug, not a nudibranch. Are you all taking notes. Whatever the hell it's called, these things are amazing-looking:

I'm leaving the depths. Gonna post something with a spine and warm blood. There are six species of giraffes. Here's the masai giraffe:
