LONDON (AFP) – A "cute" primate so rare it was thought to be extinct has been caught on camera in the forests of Sri Lanka for the first time, scientists said Monday.

The Horton Plains slender loris is a small, nocturnal animal which can grow up to 17 centimetres (six inches) long with big, bulging eyes.

Endemic to Sri Lanka, it was first discovered in 1937 but had only been seen four times since then.

Scientists last caught a glimpse of the primate in 2002, and believed the elusive animal had since died out.

But field researchers, working with the Zoological Society of London, managed to track down the mysterious creature in the forests of central Sri Lanka.
In a world first, they were able to take pictures of an adult male slender loris sitting on a tree branch.

The field team was able to capture one of the creatures and give it a physical examination, the first time that has ever been done, before releasing it back into the wild.

But experts warned that deforestation in Sri Lanka -- largely blamed on the drive to create tea plantations in the region -- was now the biggest threat to the loris.

Craig Turner, a conservation biologist at the ZSL, said their natural forest habitat had been divided up for farming and logging use, cutting off the "very cute" animals from their partners.

"The forest has now been fragmented into a series of small islands," Turner told BBC radio.

"They can't move to one another, they can't mate, breed, so it has real implications for the future persistence of the species."

@poohdog,
basically all we're doing here is posting pics we find of beautiful animals (hence the title), there's no profit being made from the picture being here, and no harm to you is intended, if you wish to have it removed, use the "Contact Us" button at the bottom of the page, cite your case and reference the "Post #" (http://able2know.org/topic/89445-304#post-4177386), i'm sure the moderators would accommodate

And it's a beautiful photo (nice job). And it's hot-linked to your site, so people can trace it back and see your whole site. Maybe you should consider it good marketing for getting people to see your site, rather than an infringement. It might do you more good than harm having it here.

Yeh, and it appears in a thread called "Beautiful Animals", not "Crap Photography", so that's probably a good thing Smile

@rosborne979,
Thanks for the compliment on the photo.....I googled my site and this appeared and I must say, I was quite surprised to see it on here....One problem I have is that, it is in such a large format...anyone can download it and use for what ever. I am more than glad for people to view my site and most of the photos I put on there are in a smaller format...which no one could do much with any way. I do do sell my work....not in a big way.... just getting started. I may reduce the file size of this one... Your right, at least, it wasn't listed under "crappy photos".

It's a Hot Link to your site. So the size that we see here is inherently available from your own site as well.

@poohdog,
poohdog, I'm sorry if you're upset to find one of your photos here. You've been given good advice and information. I don't have anything to add except to tell you that I think your photo of the hummingbird is wonderful.

Letty, Thanks for the Hooch pic. Love that breed--powerful, good face, lotsa wrinkles.

@Letty,
Miss Letty, do the French Mastiffs maintain their wrinkles when they get older? I believe that the shar-peis lose their wrinkles the bigger they get.
