Hector's Dolphin. He's only a wee fella - mature adults only 1.4m (4 or 5 feet) long.

Tigershark, He's a beauty. And that's a wonderful picture. Do you ever wonder how wildlife photographers manage to catch those events that take just a second but that look positively glorious? Patience and luck, I guess.

Yeah, guys in tweed coats lying motionless for hours on end behind ridiculous camouflage screens made of branches.

The Hector's dolphin does jump a lot, so if you find some, you will get some good pics.

Look at the detail in that picture! Magnifico. Thanks, kid.

I saw a documentary a few years back about someone wanting to photograph great white sharks breaching--not that common an occurrence. The photographer set up his gear on a boat. Poised and ready. Poised and ready. For hours. Every time he stood up and moved around a bit, he worried that he'd miss the shot. He finally got it. Don't know if this is the shot, but he got one like it:

That photo of a breaching white is from South Africa, where the great whites breach like that, but uncommom behaviour elsewhere. I was in Kaikoura last month and went in the water with these seals, but the previous time I had been there - in 2005 - a great white had been seen daily, lurking just off the rocks, so I gave it a miss.

Tigershark, Wise decision. Yes, the photo was taken off the coast of South Africa where white sharks do breach. It's now been found that they do this elsewhere as well (off the coast of California). The thing with a breaching shark is that you never know exactly when or where. You can set up your camera and hope for the best.

Humpback whale breaching. This must be something to see!

I love the silver shimmer of barracuda. And I love how they fade into the shimmer of the water and become almost invisible.

Beautiful humpback.

I have a feeling that they have to make the great white breach off California by introducing artificial stimuli. South Africa is the only place they do it naturally??

So far as I know, the breaches near California are stimulated by the same thing as those in the waters of South Africa--seals.

Great orca, btw.

Do blue whales breach? I'd love to see that.

Didn't they taunt the California ones into breaching with rubber seals? Not really a natural lure? Smile

Blue whales breaching?Don't think they do...
