That did occur to me... but am wondering about the doggy.

On calling, who did you report it to in the first place (or am I totally out to lunch... having troubling getting a2k consistently.)

I called the cops because I know it's illegal to leave a dog like that under SOME circumstances - extreme cold is one. I dunno how extreme it needs to be. The cops have a animal rescue desk/agent. That person was out, so the dispatcher left word. I could try calling that agent (animal rescue). Mostly, I know that the cops have more resources than I do. They might have gone and knocked on doors, they may have found the place the owner of the dog works at, who knows.

I hope the doggie is okay. I hope you find out what happened.

It's a Rosy Maple Moth. We have a lot of them up here in the summer.

The dog I posted is an American Eskimo dog (Eskie for short). It's not Dakota (my dog), but Dakota is the same breed and looks almost exactly like that.

Eskies love the cold, so I'm sure the dog LK saw in the car was fine, unless left for a very long time. Dakota loves to ride with me, and I prefer to keep her with me rather than leave her at home for extended periods of time, so sometimes she has to wait in the car, but only under conditions I know she will be comfortable in, and not for too long.

Here is a picture of Dakota:

How big is dakota? Surely she is larger than 20 lbs.

Dakota is 30lbs. She is a 'standard' Eskie. Eskies also come in 'toy' and 'mini' sizes.

Male Eskies tend to have more hair, and some of them have a white mane, so they look a bit like little dog-lions. The females are a bit sleeker in appearance (like Dakota) but still have a very silky long coat.

Maybe the pooch was a mini-eskie.

littlek, I can appreciate and relate to your concern about the dog in the car. I have a feeling that even a smallish dog with a substantial coat would be ok inside a car in 22 degree weather. But if there's any way you can find out to ease your mind, that would be great. Please let us know if you learn anything. (I'm worried too.) Thanks for your concern about "derailing" the thread. This thread is about animals, so your concern wasn't so much a derailment as a reasonable detour. No harm done.

rosborne, My mistake. Not a sled dog, but an American Eskimo dog. Thanks for sharing the photos of Dakota. I've fallen in love with her face.

I was thinking of showing some photos of dogs that I think are beautiful. Problem is I think they're all beautiful in one way or another. Couldn't decide which ones. Maybe it's just best to let them show up here as people post them. But there is one breed that is especially near and dear to my heart:

http://www.german-shepherd-dogs.org/pictures-images-photos/german-shepherds-02.jpg

When I was a kid, I watched Rin Tin Tin religiously. When Mrs. Tin (or is it Mrs. Tin Tin?) had puppies, the show (and sponsor) had a contest. Name the puppies. If you win the name the puppy contest, you win a puppy. Had to send in a box top of Shredded Wheat cereal along with the entry. I got my mother to buy the cereal with the understanding that I would it eat. I gagged on every spoonful, but I ate it. Entered the contest but didn't win. Still want one of dem dogs. Sigh.

Another animal near and dear to my heart is the pygmy hippopotamus. There was one at the Bronx Zoo whom I just loved. His name was Morton. Not a great beauty in the traditional sense, but it looks just fine to me:

I love the way some of the more stocky rhodesian ridgebacks look.

And, oddly, I adore the Chinese Crested dogs:

littlek, Thanks for the photos. My computer won't show me the ridgeback clearly. Don't know what the problem is. But I know the breed. I was walking down Lexington Avenue one afternoon. A woman walking a Rhodesian ridgeback pulled up beside me. I gasped (not a breed I'd ever seen in Noo Yawk before) and said out loud, "A ridgeback!" Then the woman gasped and said, "You know this breed?" Yup, I do.

It's a pleasure to see a Chinese crested without some kind of human attire on it. Not crazy about people who put clothes on dogs. Not talking about a sweater in the winter for dogs with thin coats or rain gear. I'm talking about fashion on animals. Hate that. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Horsefarm - is the hairless part smooth skin? Peachfuzz? We have one in the neighborhood who I see time to time. I have never asked to pet him. I will next time I see him.

As for the big cats from a few pages ago. I tend to prefer the lynxs. Ours look a little less exotic than those from eurasia, but I really like them, always have.

And I melt when I see these little buggers:

Here's a a rear view of a Rhodesian ridgeback. You can see the ridge. It's formed by hairs on its back growing in the opposite direction of the other hairs. Tres distinctive. These are magnificent dogs.

Boidy, I'm so glad you started this thread. Sometimes I get tired of a2k and all the sniping, but this I could read and watch forever.

While I adore horses, Dys will take a mule anytime over a horse. They are incredibly strong and will work long, hard hours.
