I recently finished my MBA- paid for by my employer (it was free- what the heck, right?). Now Im trying to decide what value it has to a guy who's in the High Tech sector (Semiconductor). Im a Maintenance Tech- have been for 20+ years. Now what? Cant seem to plot a course within my own company, so looking for options. Thanks!
The MBA is usually biased towards accounting and executive management, so it's usually not good at giving a lower-tier operational employee a low rung to start climbing. There is too great a gap between the employee's status and the employee's academic training for there to be relevance.
For example, I once asked an engineering manager if he knew that one of his employees (an electrical engineer) had an MBA from a top 50 business school. He didn't know. He didn't care either, because an MBA wasn't going to help his engineer design better circuits. The upward mobility afforded by this hard-earned degree? Zero.
On the other hand, MBAs tend to hire other MBAs, so your degree may make you an attractive candidate to move up, from the point of view your boss's bosses.
Maybe you can consider a move to a related area where your work would be regarded as a profit center instead of a cost center? With your semiconductor maintenance experience, you may be able to find work in application or product engineering for a semiconductor equipment supplier. In those areas, an MBA would be more useful.
I also wonder if your employer had a particular career track for you in mind when they sponsored your MBA education?
