HELP! I've met someone that lives in England (see my other posts, you'll ge the whole story).
He's great, and obviously I am motivated by the fact that I would like to see if this relationship has a chance by being closer to him, but that's not my only motivation.
I loved it when I went to London and I have been feeling sooooo trapped and frustrated in my life here lately, that I want to just try somethhing different! Something new! I would love to just be able to get a work visa for at least a year, move over there, just enjoy myself and immerse myself in a new culture! Go to bloody Paris on the weekend, there are so many new thing sto experience by living in Europe.
My problem? I have no idea how to go about it. To work in the UK you need a company to be willing to sponsor you and apply for a visa on your behalf (you cant do it yourself, I checked). On top of that, not only do they have to be willing to hire you, but they have to prove to Immigration that you have some skillset that they want that they could not find in any of the applicants for the job that were actually UK ccitizens. Tall order to fill huh?
So I guess this is a last resort on my part, but I have been searching online ev erywhere to no avail.....Im at a loss! I am young, only 24 years old, so my experience might be limited. Most of my experieince is in social service settings: I worked for a year with adults with developmental disabilities as a counselor in a residential setting, and I've now been working for a year for the country's largest methadone programme dealing with people with substance abuse (which also means I deal with tehir psychiatric and medical issues as I work for a hospital).
If I worked in, say, investment banking or some other type of business work it probably would be alot easier.....but all my background is in mental health/social services, on a Bachelor's degree level, I dont have any Master's or any such degree yet. I graduated college about 2 years ago.
If ANYONE has any ideas, websites to direct me to, hell, if they know anyone that works overseas or has a company overseas that they could refer me to I would be grateful. I would be willing to learn a new field of work, but obviously I would have to find a company willing to train me. I am intelligent with a good solid educational background and I could do anything I put my mind to, but I need to find someone willing to invest in me a little I guess....which is going to be hard.
Thank you for any advice you all can give.
WhatToDo :-)
Have you checked out craigslist yet?
Here's a link to the London section. There are a few other English city categories too. Click on the jobs link for the listings.

Be careful. There are a lot of scams out there in the world of international job offerings. Get a third person to check out anything you are interested in. They'll have an objective view of things not colored with rosy spectacles of romance.
Sounds like a fun adventure. There's a "Europe" category here that might get a response from the Brits of the forum. Here's a link to that too if you want to pose your question there also.

My information on Americans working for British firms may well be out of date. In the 70's the rule used to be that an American could be hired only if there were some reason that the job couldn't be handled by a Brit.
Open a dentist's office. It'll be like introducing wireless internet in Ghana.
it's not easy getting into the uk & staying street legal.
but try this site ----
www.uk-yankee.com --- it's aimed at american expats in the uk. It covers the ins & outs of getting there, life, work & how you can do it. There are thousands of americans over here for many different reasons.
