Whoa! I gotta say, this thread is a VERY nice surprise. Thanks a bunch, everyone!
For those of you who are already attorneys, my hat goes off to you. The stress of that stupid exam really threw me for loops. And more than once.
Anyway, I'm in New York (not far from the city), and I'm happy to say that I found work in a great small/mid sized firm with a focus on Civil Rights / Discrimination / Employment law. I'm one of the few who speak Spanish and I have lots of connections with the minority community, so I hope to do well. We represent all types of discrimination, but I do particularly well with race/national origin discrimination because I am a minority myself (it helps to connect with clients sometimes) and I speak their language. Still, the law is the same for them all, and it's interesting nonetheless
Amazingly, there is no shortage of employers who think they can get away with some really cruel treatment of their employees, so long as the workers don't speak English, or are new to the country, or simply don't understand that here they have legal protection against mistreatment just because of where they come from. I'm actually enjoying this quite a bit (even though the pay makes it tough to live on at times).
Oh well. Bottom line is that I like the firm, I like my coworkers, I like my clients, and I like the fact that I can make something of myself here so long as I bust my ass.
Again, thanks for the encouragement! You guys rock.
