Old Photos (Serious subject... forgive me)

Reply Thu 23 Nov, 2006 04:47 pm
I have recently come across some old photos, taken in 1904, that appear to have been from Germany, Austria, London, France, and other areas of the region.

The quality is phenomenal, some of the most impressive photos I have ever seen.

I am speculating these must have been taken by some famous photographer of the time.

As of now, I can not add any of the photos, but will as soon as possible.

Until I am able to post the photos does anyone have any ideas about who was reputable at that time, regarding photography?

One German photographer of that time would be August Sander.
google image will give you a good selection of his work.

If your photos were taken in 1904, then we're taking about the
pioneers in photography.

Can you describe the photos in more details?

This looks like a possible resource, as it has collections filed by time as well as photographer's name, and it sounds like info is available online.
The library is in New York but the photographers collected are international.

Max Missmann was another great photographer, but his primary object
was pictures of Berlin.

Ah, they're Dutch or Skandinavian. Look at their shoes.
I think there was a famous Dutch photographer around that time frame.
I'll look.......

Jane, that particular photograph just happened to have been taken in that location. I have several hundred photos, lots of them from New York City, London, Paris, parts of Germany, Holland, etc.

I'll upload more as time goes on.

I had to take the photos off because of a potential lawsuit involving ownership.

Once these matters have been cleared I will re-post.

Hm, Alfred STieglitz comes to mind. He has made great black and
white photos. Ilse Bing was good too.

Ilse Bing would have been five-years old when the photos were taken, Jane.

i doubt this will be of help , but you may find it interesting nevertheless .
a german photographer came to canada before 1900 and settled in the prairies .
he had brought quite a collection of pictures with him and took many more in the prairies .
apparently the pictures (they were actually the old glass-plate style) were stored in a barn and all traces had been lost .
sometime in the 1980's someone decided to tear down the barn and actually started to throw away many of the glass plates !
someone else found out about it and alerted the musum of canadian civilization in ottawa and a "rescue mission" was started .
there are now several thousands of those images stored in the "canadian museum of contemporary photography" - really quite a stunning collection - we have seen many of them during our visits to ottawa.
unfortunately , the museum is currently closed for an indeterminate period .

here is the museum website :

Did yall know that Life magazine was launched on nearly this day some 84 years ago.
It brought photo-journalism into everyone's house.

From that Masters of Photography site (which seems to me to have relatively few names) these seem to fit the period, if not seem that similar re photos - Alvin Coburn, Lartigue, Atget, Steichen, Steiglitz - though I skimmed fast.

Lartigue would have been ten-years old in 1904, osso. I haven't checked the others yet.
