Charlton Heston: Civil Rights Advocate?

In 1961 Charlton Heston joined in picketing "whites only" restaurants in Oklahoma City.
In 1963 he participated in the March On Washington. I have discovered a photo of him there, standing with Sidney Poitier and H. Belafonte.
I don't think he did much else.
