Brandy is made from the distilled leftovers from the wine making process, specifically, the skins and vines and leaves from the initial pressing of the grapes.

You can serve brandy anyway you like. Me, I like it served in a warmed glass.

"international conventions"?

Kinda like "international conventions" prevent me from selling software I write as Microsoft™ software?

I'm only partly kidding here.

Well, Russians were obliged to remove the word "cognac" from the Armenian brandy bottles that they exported to Europe. They lost a lawsuit in mid-60s.

Yeah I know. It's not exactly the same issue as a trademark but it's similar.

Exactly. The same refers to the name "champagne": not every sparkling wine of high quality may be called this way.

Steissd is right about all of that....and don't you even TRY calling your foreign sparkling wine 'Champagne'. The French are very possessive of their Terroir.

Just like whiskey, there is good and bad. St. Remy and Dujardin are two mid-priced brandies that have good flavour. The other solution is to make an investment and drink Cognac.
