The Military Commisiona Act of 2006 which has recently been passed by congress officially overthrows the U.S. Constitution and gives President Bush dictatorial power. Under this law the government can name anyone including a U.S. Citizen as an enemy combatant, revoke they're citizenship, and then indefinitely detain them in a military prison, secretly torture them, secretly try them in a kangaroo court, and then secretly execute them. Not necessarily in that order.
If you don't believe me why don't you go read the bill yourself. You can read it on the Library of Congress website by going to
http://thomas.loc.gov. The House version is H R 6166 and the senate version is S 3930
Here are some news articles and video clips about this bill that will confirm that I'm telling you the truth

Am I alone in thinking that this is a really bad idea?
No, you're not alone. And it IS a VERY bad idea.
Really? I wonder why no one else on this board seems to have anything to say about it then.
To me, this really shows both Republicans and Democrats for the gutless, disgraceful sniveling pigs that they are.
Does anyone know how really f*cking stupid laws get taken off the books? What has to happen now?
Is there anyone here who thinks this is a good law?
Well, I don't have anything to say about it because I think everything has been said already. We hashed it to death in "America spying on Americans" and then again on the Gitmo threads, and the Jose Padilla threads, and every other time it has come up. I just have nothing new to say that hasn't already been said. I really hope that somebody challenges it and takes it to Supreme Court, but it will have to be some civil liberties group because no-one who is actually affected by the law will be able to do it.
The only way people will ever get upset about this in large enough numbers is if, somewhere in that law, there was a provision that allowed the president to personally confiscate the firearms of anyone "suspected of aiding any terrorist, as defined solely by Bush".
Stop reading the propaganda and read the actual bill. This thread is as factual as the tooth fairy and easter bunny.

Read it and let me know what your actual fears about are...
Whaddya know, McG's right, even if his link doesn't work. Previous versions of the bill included citizens, but the final bill that was signed does not.
Of course, I still have a problem with the bill and think/hope it will be found unconstitutional. But I'm glad that for the time being my habeas corpus rights, if not those of my husband, are still intact.
What are the problems you have with the bill?
The fact that it gives the power to interpret the Geneva conventions to the president, and that it strips people of their habeas corpus rights. Give me time to finish wading through it and I may have more, but that will do for now.
