Daddio - we do consider it, but we know that it isn't a viable suggestion in America at this time.

This is a local school here in the Central Valley. One of the kids later confessed to starting this false rumor. Was the officials' reaction to the rumor enough, too much? How about the parents who pulled their kids from school today? Kids are encouraged to report such overheard rumors to an adult. With false rumors such as this one, will it turn into the boy who cried wolf? Will people not take such rumors as seriously? Should they? How do communities keep such rumors from turning into panic.

Shooting Rumor Sparks Concern At High School
Many Parents Pull Kids Out Of Class

POSTED: 12:19 pm PDT October 6, 2006
UPDATED: 1:40 pm PDT October 6, 2006

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Concerned parents pulled their children out of class Friday at River City High School in West Sacramento after a rumor spread of a planned shooting on the campus.

Uniformed and undercover officers were stationed on the campus to keep an eye out for any trouble.

"It began last Monday with a phone call from a concerned parent. A message had come from her daughter that she'd heard that there might be a drive-by shooting here on Friday," River City High School Principal Stewart Mackay said.

District officials said immediate action was taken to investigate the rumor, but it could not be substantiated.

Administrators said the police presence on the campus was requested so that everyone feels safe.

"With the tragedies that have occurred throughout the nation over the last few weeks at school campuses, everybody's concerns are heightened. We are doing everything we possibly can. If we hear a rumor we try and track it down," Washington Unified School District Superintendent Steven Lawrence said.

"I hope that we can work to prevent rumors from spreading, causing panic. Most schools are safe and this one is too," Mackay said.

Most parents were notified of the rumor by telephone on Thursday night.

By noon Friday, about 100 students had been picked up by their parents while others didn't show up at all.

Schools need:

1. Armed security guards, best to have City police

2. Locked security doors, to be only opened in case of fire or other emergency

3. Metal detectors at all entrance doors, to scan the entrants.

4. Drug and explosive sniffing dogs at entrance and patroling throughout the school. Keep dogs unmuzzled and if need be unleashed at all times.

5. Education of students and parents. Include a visit to a morgue to view a shotgun victim ( or see a film). Most kids don't know the physical damage a gun can do to a human body.

6. Cure (?) the social ills; teach kids coping and anger management skills ( if possible )

7. Do not permit any weapons or drugs on school property.

8. Institute an ethics course, mandatory for graduation, for all kids .

( Not covered yet, but should be is the issue of young pregnant female students, who deliver babies into the toilet.

:::flashing back to the battles we had with "The Establishment" over open campus at my high school:::

My, how things have changed in a few short decades. We've gone from an open campus where kids were permitted to leave school grounds at lunch time to go to fast food places to Fort Knox type lock downs where armed guards and metal detectors protect all the skeerd kids hiding under their desks.

Geez, Miller, if we accomplish number 6, why would we need the others?

There really seems to be no solution. But I would say having security guards would be the best option. There is no sure way to combat school violence. Children are crafty and parents need to be attentive to their children. It starts a home. Behavior at home is a key factor into school shootings. There really isn't anyone you can place the blame on, it's a "mixture" of "faults". I think parents have to take the bulk of responsibility. No you cannot "control" the every movement of your child, but lets not forget this is your child and your responsibility, those are the consequences of having children.

As for the adults who have killed at schools in these past few weeks...
