Evening all, are we back in work tomorrow?

Tomorrow? To-day or whatever, the Christmas New Year break is far too long, utterly ridiculous in my book. It takes another two weeks for the majority to get back into the swing of things.

The day was when Christmas Day was the only official holiday, Boxing Day was optional and New Year too, providing it was within reason. I never had a single Christmas Day off completely from 1963 until 1997.
One of my daughters is in the nursing profession and she worked Boxing and New Year Day, this time, some years it's Christmas Day and New years Day. Has anybody any idea of the percentage of Brits who do actually work a full day or shift on these holidays? I bet Spendi never worked on either of them.

You were lucky. We lived for three months in a paper bag in a septic tank. We used to have to get up at six in the morning, clean the paper bag, eat a crust of stale bread, go to work down t' mill, fourteen hours a day, week-in week-out, for sixpence a week, and when we got home our Dad would thrash us to sleep wi' his belt.

Moan, moan, moan, moan bloody moan...

1. Monty was born in England, therefore he is English.

2. Totally agree about "Paki" being bang out of order.

3. Going by your criteria for nationalities though, it would appear that we were in fact beaten by a team consisiting of Brits and Irish. Do you not have any proper Australians over there that can play cricket?

In 1868 very first Australian cricket team to visit England was Aboriginal. They played a match at North Shields, enthralling crowds with displays of boomerang throwing as well as cricket.
The first tour by a white Australian team in England did not happen until 1880.

We won that one too!

Are there any aboriginals in the team now?

Do they have their own team/league?

Sorry I posted the wrong photo

The Aboriginals played 47 matches throughout England over a period of six months between May and October, winning 14, losing 14 and drawing 19 - a good result that would have surprised many at the time. Their skills were said to range from individuals who were exceptional to two or three who hardly contributed at all. Johnny Mullagh scored 1,698 runs and took 245 wickets.

Andrew Symons was actually born in England I think to west indian parents but adopted and "transported" to Australia at a very early age.

He opted to represent Australia despite being eligible (and asked to play) for both England (his country of birth) and West Indies (through his parents).

smorgs thats like saying do English pakis have their own league.

If a person happens to have aboriginal heritage he plays at whatever level he is capable of playing at.

you read me wrong DP,

I didn't mean to offend.

I don't know anything about cricket.

I didn't realise I had committed a faux pas.

Hey Clary, and others, I just got a message from Vinsan (Clary and I met him in Mumbai) who is at the moment in Darlington! He is in England for a six-month contract with his company. He will get some free time later so will be able to come across on the bus, for a visit.

He has not been on A2K for a while (used to be a regular contributor) because his company blocked the site in India. So I asked him to try from Yorkshire, and he might come on.

Yo Ppl I am Home. I am here in Darlington for 6 months.

Just rented a house next to Stooperdale Offices on the Brinkburn Road.

People are really helpful and friendly here.

Reason I am saying this is, I have this lady in office named Leigh Janesson, she helped me to get the house by constantly calling all Estate Agents around for whole last week, come to my house with her husband on weekends to tell me about security , fire alarms, Gas Electricty meters etc. and even brought her spare Portable 14 inch television for me for entertainment.

That was an absolute "out of way" help. I did not expect anyone here would take that much time out for other's problems. I am really obliged and impressed.

If I am not mistaken, Monty Panesar is Indian origin, not paki.

But I would like to state this as he is born in England, he must be called British. Calling him of other nationality would not be justified.

Hello everybody.

Just back after a lovely break from work etc. in London and then skiing in Kitzbuehel...where luckily it snowed on the day we arrived.

I'm sure I've missed a lot since I last logged into this thread (before Christmas) so I hope you've all had a good time over the holiday season and haven't made too many unachieveable resolutions.

I'm signed up for the London Triathlon in August, so it will shortly be time to lose some weight and swim, bike, run myself to fitness so I don't embarrass myself.

I think they should ban the triathalon.

It gives masochism a bad name.

Surely there are quite sufficient variations with the usual practices. And it's a bit watered down having it in August.

Still-it's quite good watching the ladies change from the swim to the bike from the comfort of the sofa.

I read Theodor Reik's Masochism in Modern Man to find out what it was all about but it isn't as good as Venus in Furs.
