Well played, sublime!

Were they both googlies, or was one a wrong-un?

Since I have a bit of English blood I'll call em both googlies although I wouldn't mind throwing some darts in Austraila, we are talking about darts right?

So, there's a englishman subletting here and he thinks that POMS is a self-reference which Aussies use for themselves. I told him I was pretty sure it was a lovingly derogatory reference to brits. Who's right?

Poms or Pommies are those blighters from England!

The ones that just fell apart comprehensively at cricket - with a 5 - 0 defeat!

Australians certainly don't use it on themselves. (what an insult! Cool )

For what's it worth Littlek (and this is open to argument), I was taught that it comes from the initials 'POHM' stamped on clothing and equipment used by English convicts. It meant Prisoner Of His/Her Majesty and marked out felons transported to Australia. I personally respect Englishmen and would not call them "Poms" as I feel it is derogatary. On the cricket field I would refer to them as our "arch enemy" Smile

I like that very much, thought it was unlikely to be an acronym - like POSH which is nothing to do with Port Out, Starboard Home.

Walter...amazing you should have met someone in that accident..I know that junction probably going round sharp bend too fast.

Aussies...well played you antipodean *******. England were crap.

Smorgs buy a gun

Clary, hi Clary, did you know Dartington is being relocated? Ask Walter...he knows all about it. Happy 2007.

McT...you went to Edinburgh to watch the wind and the rain?

If POSH doesnt stand for port out starboard home what does it stand for?

Pomegranites...heard that one.

Off to by 2kgs mussels + good bottle sauvingnon blanc...from ASDA (what does that stand for?) ding ding.

It is in the nature of that type of work Steve.

I suspect your concern is a form of patriarchal protectionism within a context of group solidarity (A2K Brit thread) and if it is scrutinised it comes down to the idea that ladies oughtn't to work in such places.

There are many other Jobcentres and these things are routine in them. Lots of occupations are dealing with that stuff on a daily basis.

I'm surprised that a scientific, materialistic atheist is given to sentiment.

ASDA is Associated Dairies.

Hey Clary, and others, I just got a message from Vinsan (Clary and I met him in Mumbai) who is at the moment in Darlington! He is in England for a six-month contract with his company. He will get some free time later so will be able to come across on the bus, for a visit.

He has not been on A2K for a while (used to be a regular contributor) because his company blocked the site in India. So I asked him to try from Yorkshire, and he might come on.
