CONGRATULATIONS, Joanne. One of these days I am going to claim to people that I knew you when.... Very Happy
Keep it up. I'm sure this helps motivation and confidence. Just what I need. But I'm just as glad to see it happening to you.

Portal, apparently ordinary gesso is full of bug bits and mic sht. This person screens it. He is an impeccable craftsman before he starts to paint. Ne'er mind the details.

In my own case, I have bugs come over to meet my paintings, plus I am a nonconsumate craftsperson, indeed have only mild interest in it.

We have this gallery, for whatever time we survive, which seems to be diminishing by the day, but...to the subject at hand, those who show with us differ. Some are devil may care, and very free in their work, and some are virtually photographic and do nice tight framing, and some use anything around as substrate...

and you would think that people are destined to paint one way or the other based on idiosyncracies of character, and I say not. People can play in different ways.

Thanks JLN it was fun but the day before and the first day I was a total wreck. The best comment was from a non buyer - who has the patience to do this - my Aunt Jane was with me and after the lady left we laughed and laughed as all of you guys would too. I am the most anxious not patient person in the world but she thought that, hehe.

One couple who did buy two pieces tried to match them, that was a good laugh too.

I've heard recently from on-line colleagues in response to my probes: Kayla and Colorific. Glad to report that they have had productive summers. Kayla has sold three paintings this summer and her gallery is doing well. Colorific has been having a great summer. He's having, or had, two solo exihibits in upstate N.Y. and a group show somewhere else. He's done some major carpentry and set designs for Kafka's "The Trial," to have a run in Brooklyn and later, perhaps, in Avery Fisher Hall in the Lincoln Center. Boy, I travel in good company. They both promise to return to us soon. I can't download Colorific's link for the play. Maybe you can: www.blackmoontheatre.org.
And that's the news from Lake Wobegone.

I suppose it is a bit off topic really but I like it that this thread has been revived because it was interesting - so I'll put it here and then maybe it can continue on track?

We are having 'open studios' in our area, organised by a group of friends and moi. I've done the brochure and publicity, a friend has done the website (not yet finished) Hidden Treasures

Local colleges, studios and individuals are taking part and there are special exhibitions taking place. We got lottery funding so were able to do a colour brochure, website and have banners made

It all happens the last week in September and the first week in October.

I'm in 3 bits 'cos I'm in a couple of the groups taking part and I'm a new tutor at a college and there is an exhibition of tutors work going up as part of the event.

Last year a friend and i did it on our own, with me doing a black and white brochure and Ros being treasurer. This year is bigger - next year ....watch this space!

back on topic....

do any of you do printmaking? etching, collagraphs, drypoint. lino, lithography etc????

I'd love to hear about it and what you do.

or any interesting American printmakers whose work I can look at.

I have never been able to afford to get into lithography and it looks very hard physical work preparig the stone and i have arthritis in my fingers, so I've given it a miss. It turns out some exciting results though.

I do enjoy all the other processes when i get chance. I belong to the Print Workshop here, a lovely cooperative set up with wonderful facilities and a lovely friendly atmosphere.

I'm primarily a painter but do really like printmaking as well.

Vivien;
i hope you get a lot of satisfaction/publicity from your coming show (i won't say good luck, since from all the work you have done, 'luck' will have nothing to do with it!).

As you may have noticed, from my general comments, i'm not a huge fan of 'traditional' methods, but do respect the knowledge they represent.
As for 'printmaking', the computer offers a fuller, faster, more 'manipulable' source of image creation. As always learning the basics from the old ways serves as an entry point, but moving on into virtuallity opens huge new vistas.
Software, and the printing of the finished product are the only economically challenging points one has to deal with.

Bo I enjoy working with computers and digital imagery too.

do you find reactions to it fairly extreme? love/hate? that's what I find here.

If reactions to art in general are extreme, love/hate; then you are doing something right! Laughing

You much too kind. I'm in the midst of a light funk.(again) Coming to this site always helps me clear my head. Masonite? I've never used it, but am becoming intrigued. I always welcome new ground. Speaking of ground. I have been reading about a small town in NY state, New Paltz. Has anyone been there? I would love to hear more about the place as there seems to be a new movement coming from the Hudson group area. I am thinking of taking a vacation to that area next year. I need to get away from California dreaming and the birthplace of Mr. Kinkaid. There seems to be an increasing display of kitsch and commercialism in my town as of late. Probably due to the tightening of the pursestrings. Initially it's interesting to watch some of my colleagues dance to the decorator art tune, but disheartening in the long run. Meditation has helped bring my energy and focus inward. I get very down if I don't think my art is authentic, part of me. It doesn't matter if the stuff sells or not. If the piece isn't "there," it means nothing to me.

Found it! www.blackmoontheatrecompany.org Went to the site and found it very exciting. Digital art has always intrigued me, but I'm very slow when it comes to computers. I can't even get my pictures into my computer. Something about an error in my portal. Scared the hell out of me. I didn't know if I should call Kodak or my ob/gyn.
