"There are people in this state who have suffered from terrorism, and taking even a dollar of their money to support a terrorist is unacceptable," Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said Tuesday in announcing that he won't allow any state resources to be used to help protect Mohammed Khatami when the former Iranian president speaks at Harvard University in Boston on Sunday.
Romney, a potential candidate for the Republican Party's 2008 presidential nomination, also called Harvard's invitation to Khatami "a disgrace to the memory of all Americans who have lost their lives at the hands of extremists."
The Boston Police Department said it would assist the State Department in providing security.
Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., told the Boston Globe that even though he thinks Khatami should not have been invited to speak at Harvard, the state should still assist in security during his visit.
"It sets a very troublesome precedent to deny state protection," Lynch said in an e-mail to the newspaper. "He is here. While there may be no benefit to us from his visit, we should see that he leaves safely and as soon as possible."
Monday, Khatami told USA TODAY that U.S. forces should stay in Iraq until that country's government is ready to assert greater control. On his visit to the USA, he has been to Chicago and is also to give speeches in New York, Washington and Virginia.
