Unusual Places to Visit in the USA

This site lists very unusual "attractions" in cities throughout the US -- lots of gangster hangouts and graves, and some groovy little trivia bits:

Something I didn't know about Oklahoma City until now:

"Sylman Goldman invented the shopping cart here on June 4, 1937"

Cool, c.i.! My husband would love the Rosecrucian Egyptian Museum -- he's totally into that stuff!

Mesilla, New Mexico (gorgeous little town):

"MESILLA, N. MEX - Billy the Kid was found guilty of murder here in an adobe building at the southeast corner of the Plaza in 1881, and was sentenced to hang. On April 18, 1881 Billy knocked out one of jail deputies and stole a gun from Pat Garrett's office. He shot and killed two deputies, stole a horse and escaped."

Dang, who would ever have thought there'd be so much gore from little old Washington state? Nearly every one of those attractions has something to do with a mass murderer. The one about the courtroom hexing in Tacoma is very strange - I've lived in the area for a long time and NEVER heard about that. Great story for around the campfire this summer.

Well, let me chime in here for those who are willingly to do a bit of hiking, and canoeing.

Southern Illinois is an ecologically unique area in the United States. It is the northern limit of the range of southern species, the southern limit of the range of northern species--in southern Illinois you will find sugar maples which are native to the region, and black cypress which are native to the region. The Shawnee National Forest is a wonderful place for those who like to camp out, and are interested in seeing a truly beautiful terrain combined with an astounding range of plant and animal species. 'K, i'm done now.

Love the roadside america site....especially the muffler men, I remember one around when I was young. My parents did the wierd trips that were really enjoyable in a twisted sort of way- Santas Village, Gaslight Village, I remember some big croc down in Florida---all very interesting...and unusual really.

The big Croc must be Gatorland "Orlandos best 1/2 day attraction"

The Dinasour Museum thing got me to thinking of an unusual thing people would visit <including my parents Rolling Eyes> that was dinasours in a guys backyard....I know..one of those very unusual..however..interestingly enough when I look it up I find on roadside america the following breakdown
Quote:
Southington, CT - Three Concrete Dinosaurs
Update on the dinosaurs - construction on the house appears finished and the dinosaurs are back - at least some of them. There's a standing t-rex, a collapsed (and apparently hollow - perhaps they're not concrete after all?) t-rex, and some sort of unidentifiable lizardish monster creature painted black with white skeleton markings. It never used to be there. Long long ago there was also a stegosaurus but it's left nary a trace. [matt baume, 02/24/2001]

Southington, CT - Three Concrete Dinosaurs
In Southington, on the Meriden-Waterbury Turnpike, which is also known as Route 322, there are three concrete dinosaurs in the backyard of the house located next to the westbound I-691 exit ramp (exit 4). My recollection is that these dinosaurs started appearing one-by-one in the late 1950s/early 1960s. I remember reading a newspaper account some years ago that mentioned that the dinosaurs were built by the former owner of the house. The dinos are still there nearly 40 years later, although one of them has fallen over and foliage is starting to overgrow all of them. The T-Rex, which I estimate to be 10 to 12 feet tall, is still very impressive! [Stan Horzepa, 06/07/1998]
[RA: May 30, 2001 - Statues are reported gone, with non-prehistoric construction evident. ]

Who knows...maybe they, or remnents of them are still there..however it looks like they may be gone...soooo sad

The Mohave Dessert Phone seems to also have been dismantled, another interestingly unusual place people sought out to visit.

Great sites, Quinn! The Ausable Chasm particularly catches my eye. Dinosaurs in a guy's backyard -- sounds like great vacation pics to me! Smile
