I heard a child say that outside my home, when they leave school, they might find they have to work!

That might come as a shock!

I'll make it up to you. Let's go down to the candy store and get some wax lips and red licorice.

Myfriends 8 year old daughter came into my work today.
I seem to have taken it upon myself to give her life advice, but I think it comes across as 'lifes crap and this is how you might be able to avoid it'.
I try and say to her,'eat well' which is really me saying 'dont get fat, once you get fat itl be hard to shift it'.
Also if she shows an interest in something(we were looking at a map as she is going camping)I will say ' you could get a job as a weather girl when your older'.
I also suggested an ambulance person but she wasnt keen.
I just want to soften the blow.At one point I jokingly said to her 'dont grow up, once your a grown up youl hae to pay for everything'!!!!!!

Do you remember those wax containers that came in different shapes and were filled with some noxious, brightly colored and sickly sweet liquid?

Those are the ones. I remember the coke bottle shape, straw shapes and (of all things) a pistol.

Have some bubble gum cigars everyone!

I Don't Wanna Grow Up
Tom Waits

When I'm lyin' in my bed at night
I don't wanna grow up
Nothin' ever seems to turn out right
I don't wanna grow up
How do you move in a world of fog
That's always changing things
Makes me wish that I could be a dog
When I see the price that you pay
I don't wanna grow up
I don't ever wanna be that way
I don't wanna grow up

Seems like folks turn into things
That they'd never want
The only thing to live for
Is today...
I'm gonna put a hole in my TV set
I don't wanna grow up
Open up the medicine chest
And I don't wanna grow up
I don't wanna have to shout it out
I don't want my hair to fall out
I don't wanna be filled with doubt
I don't wanna be a good boy scout
I don't wanna have to learn to count
I don't wanna have the biggest amount
I don't wanna grow up

Well when I see my parents fight
I don't wanna grow up
They all go out and drinking all night
And I don't wanna grow up
I'd rather stay here in my room
Nothin' out there but sad and gloom
I don't wanna live in a big old Tomb
On Grand Street

When I see the 5 o'clock news
I don't wanna grow up
Comb their hair and shine their shoes
I don't wanna grow up
Stay around in my old hometown
I don't wanna put no money down
I don't wanna get me a big old loan
Work them fingers to the bone
I don't wanna float a broom
Fall in love and get married then boom
How the hell did I get here so soon
I don't wanna grow up

<sigh>

I want to wander away,
watching stars and starry bay.

It's...kind of strange as well as normal thing to see people addressing foundamental problems with easy dismissal and light jokes.

What problems?

Seriously. In my family I was reminded daily as a child that being an adult was hard. Either life was going to be a dismal joyless affair, working yourself to death, or an existance where every waking moment was fraught with danger.

Having fun was always to be tempered with the knowledge that there would be a price to pay.

I went around for years waiting for the other shoe to drop. Then, one day I realized that life was not that hard, it was full of happiness and fun, and that I was a very lucky person.

Stuff that comes up is just that....stuff. Happens to everyone. I'm not going to let the things that happen in every persons life ruin it. You either change it, accept it and either way move on.

Tomorrow-- my day off-- I have to go to the cable office and pick up a cable box that they should have delivered when they installed our cable, meet with my divorce lawyer (ex and I are wrangling over custody/support issues still!) whom I currently owe over $1300 to, then race home to meet with my financial advisor (who will probably tell me that I don't make enough money and that I should try to save more of what little I do make).

It SUCKS being an adult.
