JUNE ART CHAT - Light in Art Sundays 8 - 10pm New York Time

Reply Sun 1 Jun, 2003 02:21 pm
The paintings of Caravaggio and Vermeer and Goya come immediately to mind when I think of light in art, but there are many other ways of working with it, including light installations by artists such as Robert Irwin. Light can be a player in abstract works of painting, is a vital component of photography, does a lot of the work in forming the presence of a sculpture.....

I'm late in posting this chat subject and can't add links right now..
please add some too!

Yes, farmerman, there is every sunday. The difficulty is that all of us can't or don't always show up on the dot of the start of the chat time...and it is hard to wait around for someone else to show up.

Sometimes four people are there at the start, many times none. I have waited various times, six minutes, twenty minutes, a half hour (balancing my checkbook, cleaning out stacks of papers, filing receipts in order, all hated tasks....) and have had people check in. Once I waited an hour and somebody checked in just to see if anyone was chatting...a guy from New Jersey, and we ended up talking for a long time about food...

For me the chats start at 5pm on sunday afternoon, and I am still doing laundry or starting cooking or should be out watering the yard...so sometimes
I check in and run back and forth to see if some one else has.

The lit landscape is interesting. I don't know if all things are better for being simplified. I tend to shy away from minimalist art as it's been all the rage since the 60's and I get bored of it in museums. What makes this persons work different/better than that of a light designer on a stage, or an innovative home decorator with a feel for space? Why do these deserve to be "art" ? I know I am a purist, but I am not attracted to these pieces. It's not that they are made of light, but that other people have been working with light and space for decades, these artists introduce nothing new or better to the scope of art from what I have seen.

It is pretty...

Portal, I am not all that interested in the work on the links either. I think the work takes an element of perception, how light affects what we see, and separates it as a subject, and that that is a reasonable thing to make into an art piece. In looking for a topic for art chat, shepaints and I talked briefly about light in art; the links are to add some recent work that some may not know about.

I haven't been coming out to the chats, but your topic interested me as I've often heard painters and photographers talk about how different it is to work in the northern light. Soooooo, I've been doing quite a bit of reading on the Group of Seven and artists of the Baltic, and how the northern light was thought to have influenced their work. It's been interesting. Thanks for the research push! Very Happy

oh, sorry. Didn't know why those were posted. I guess I was in the mood for critique-ing. It would be interesting to have a critique section on here, maybe in the other art section. You know, put a picture up and everyone tears it up, gives their input.

BTW, does anyone know of any other good art forums? This is the first serious/good one Iv'e come across.

Vivien - this site click is the one that works best for me - i use the sunclock selection. Right now I can tell that you and I are both in daylight, and if I look more carefully, I can figure out the times as well.

Vivien, I think it would be one in the morning in England...which is why we sometimes talk about a second art chat time. The art chats ebb and flow. Sometimes very few show up, or people show up but don't wait around for others, since it tends to tie one to a computer and a big blank.

Other times they are very lively.
