Is Your Choosen Career Work?

Reply Sun 10 Nov, 2002 03:10 pm
In my lifetime I have known three people who earn a living doing what the love to do thus their work is not work. Personally I had this experience just once and it only lasted for two years.

I still don't know what I want to be when I grow up. I have just left my job of 11 years to work for the Iowa Dept. of Natural Resources. I love the job, but is it my life's work? I dunno. It will be enjoyable enough to get me through to retirement. I don't think one can ask for more.

Still getting used to the quirks here...

I clicked on topics that had replies since i last visited, and this one came up.

But, hey... I'll answer.

What I'm doing now sometimes bugs the heck out of me. Stuck in a very small room with folks not as educated and of different tastes and politics... was a lot of why I spent so much time on-ine...

but the work itself, sometimes can be quite enjoyable. I program an inspection/measurement machine, and I am very good at what I do! It's a great combination of spatial thought and hard nuts programming with a healthy dose of trigenometry thrown in on the side.

doesn't do much for my writing... but hey, that's what you guys are for.

Keep your eye on the ball, keep your nose to the grindstone, keep your shoulder to the wheel... Just try to get any work done in that position.

Hi all!

(boney fingers!! Laughing )

I am lucky enough to be doing what I love, and getting paid for it.
For a cook, like me, there's nothing better than working for people who appreciate you, and not really having a budget, so I get to work with fun, expensive ingredients Very Happy

Is it work?? Yeah, it's still long hours, it can be very stressful to get food out for large groups
(sometimes 100+ people),...but the difference is that I enjoy it, and am basically working for myself.

It still makes me tired!! Laughing

I enjoy what I do very much. I'm a psychoanalyst in private practice. But in spite of the fact that it's fascinating work and I enjoy it, some days (especially Mondays) it's still hard to go to work, because I'd rather play.

I've had a number of different jobs over the years, and I've liked some of them -- for a while. And after a while, I would get bored and want to move on get annoyed with something or another and want to move on. So, I guess the answer is that I never really found my 'life's work' other than just managing to keep those around me as happy as possible.

Those 45 minute hours are filled with fun, no joke. Even if they are also filled with misery. I see people improve and get what they want. It's very satisfying.

Painting fulltime, no more putting it off because of fear of, not so much criticizism, but that people will see the real me I think. All my life I have dabled in art, spent much time looking and reading about art. But I did not start any real painting until 1998. Now I feel I have attained enough ability (the mechanics) to go ahead and just do it. Living on my anniutity is sparse but not as sparse as working in positions which totally bore me to distraction.

Will do but have to get take some first. It is a recent decision to do this and I have been reluctant in the past to show my stuff to anyone. Shocked But recently have had encouragement from other artists, people who tell me true what they think. Embarrassed

Mrs. SealPoet is also working on a 180. Going from CPA to Landscape design.

Funny thing is, just as she's making the switch, taking classes etc. she gets a CPA gig that she likes... good pay, good people, good company... And Bonus! It's very close to where she's taking classes!

Joanne... go for it. Inspire me!

My job bores the piddiddly out of me but it keeps my mind active and busy through the day, pays the bills, and heck, on occassion its okay..basically accounting/systems/purchasing/customer service etc etc Lots of people cant do it so, well I guess I will
I would certainly much rather be photographing something beautiful somewhere else all day long, perhaps in retirement
We should all spend some part of our life doing what we love, and I think its good to do it while you can...so, good luck and go for it
